It provides a much more realistic perspective on the challenging job that Mounties faced in trying to enforce the law in isolated outposts, hundreds of miles from the nearest town in the early days of Canada. The film stands strongly against much more expensive films as a modern western. Well worth seeing.

Suzuki's frenetic camerawork feels akin to what Jean Luc Godard was doing with films like "Breathless," only I find this film more enjoyable. I love the chipmunk-cheeked protagonist Hanada (Jo Shishido), the number 3 killer who finds himself a target after he botches up an assassination. His fetish for sniffing steaming rice is hilarious and reminds me of the quirkiness that Quentin Tarantino uses in his films. Though some of the plot elements may be somewhat sketchy, this film is thoroughly enjoyable and memorable and achieves what it sets out to do, which is to be a fun, brutal yakuza flick.

Watts delivers birth to a child to a prostitute who dies during child birth and becomes interested in the mother's life after uncovering her diary. She comes across a driver (Mortensen) who is trying to move his way up in the mob. The contents of the diary are vital as they uncover aspects of that threaten the mob. Eastern Promises was an interesting movie that features good performances and some pretty good scenes. The film is not action centered and does its pace will likely detract people. Although I thought it was a solid drama, the film does not have enough resolve for me to see it again.
