(ag) wrote: Contains lots of voice-over narration and non-linear storytelling. Oliver (Ewan McGregor) is a perpetually gloomy graphic artist, sho we see as a boy with his eccentric mother and a man working on a long term relationship and dealing with news from his father. Semi-autobiographical from writer/director Mike Mills life. Mlanie Laurent, the year after she appeared in Inglourious Basterds, is Anna, the love interest to Oliver. Christopher Plummer's character Hal, Oliver's father, finally starts living his authentic life as a gay man and faces terminal cancer. A sweet story about modern day relationships. Checking this movie off my watchlist means that I have completed my primary Oscar list. Going back to the beginning of the Academy Awards in 1927, I have now seen every film (that I can find) that has won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Director, Writing, Lead and Supporting Actor, and Lead and Supporting Actress.

(br) wrote: An essay piece, one of a kind ode to everlasting love. In what is almost an absolutely theatrical display of composition, this really manages to display and defend the premise of absolute love and all it naivete and show its disastrous consequences, a risk to take for something almost the closest we have to anything ethereal on earth.

(au) wrote: 'Applause' is a moving movie that everyone should go and see. Danish actress Paprika Steen does an impressive portrayal of recovering alcoholic stage performer Thea Barfoed whose past battles with alcohol have cost her not only her marriage but access to her two sons. Throughout the movie we watch Thea struggle to remain sober while trying to reclaim custody of her sons. Thea tries to have an unsedated existence, but unfortunately everywhere she turns she's surrounded by demons from her past. 'Applause' leaves you wanting more and curious to see what director Martin Pieter Zandvliet will do next.
