Matt B (de) wrote: A timeless classic that set the bar for both science fiction and horror genres. This film was both bold and innovative with a strong female lead and special effects that still hold up to this day. It's hard to believe this film is 37 years old and still is more efficient than most science fiction horror films.
Private U (br) wrote: This is a gem of a film. While most would say this is well told tale of the African American struggle during one of its most critical eras, that does not negate the fact that this is simply a well crafted brilliantly performed film. A must see.
Dave S (de) wrote: Awesome and tiresome in almost equal measure, so much so that I'm still not sure if I'm overrating or underrating it. On the plus side, Russell isn't afraid to let the fumbling theater troupe be legitimately fumbling. They garishly over-emote, botch accents, forget lines, and clomp loudly across the stage with heavy feet. The whole thing is a stunning display of good bad taste. But it's also really, really long, and the Busby Berkely tribute numbers are well-executed but not terribly interesting once the initial visual is established. And I have no idea what the forest elf interlude was all about. Also, the backstage drama is sort of negligible - rather than developing full personalities or conflicts off-stage there's just a one note unrequited love element and the constant mugging to the visiting director in the audience; both amusing for a while but they don't exactly drive any sort of narrative.
