The epic adventures of the legendary Baran the Bandit following his release from prison. After serving 35 years, it is no surprise that the world has changed dramatically. Still, Baran can't help but be shocked to discover that his home village is now underwater thanks to the construction of a new dam. He then heads for Istanbul to get revenge upon his former best friend, the man who snitched on him and stole his lover Keje. Along the way, Baran teams up with Cumali, a tough young punk who finds the thief's old-fashioned ways rather quaint. When Cumali gets into deep trouble with a crime boss, Baran adds another vengeful task to his roster.

(jp) wrote: Oh. My. Glob. This thing started as a languidly sprawling tone piece, then steadily unraveled its mystery aspects to unveil an emotionally wrecking and stunningly beautiful portrayal of true love. The script is unbelievable, and Villeneuve's steady and patient hand never shows its cards. Just more proof that Denis is one of the best we have around right now.

(ru) wrote: Sadly not as good as the first, O' Quinn wasn't as fun this time around. He seemed to make a few more slip ups here. He still did the role justice but it just wasn't as good.

(jp) wrote: Gabriel Over the White House is a bona fide left-field Pre-Code Hollywood oddity. What we have here is a Depression-Era New Deal propaganda film that romanticizes the rise of an FDR-like Fascist American Dictator, President Judson Hammond. After awakening from a near-fatal traffic accident, the president is apparently possessed by the spirit of the Archangel Gabriel. Following his divine possession, President Hammond fires his cabinet, dissolves congress, and immediately declares martial law. Hammond creates a federal "Army of Construction" (putting millions of unemployed to work), abolishes the 18th amendment while opening government liquor stores, and tries political opponents in kangaroo military courts where they are executed by firing squad. After disarming the entire world the President is seen as one of the greatest men that ever lived. While the politics of this film boil down to a radical anti-democratic pipe dream, Gabriel Over the White House provides a unique snapshot of Depression Era America. For the love of history, Pre-Code cinema, and all that is weird, Gabriel Over the White House is a wonderful curiosity piece.
