Matt R (fr) wrote: This is a very atypical Bollywood film that not only manages to somehow eschew the dancing routines but also has a few strong and poignant messages, including fair treatment of the fairer sex and the valuation of merit over and against the religious bigotry that has sadly come to define some segments of modern India. The sports plot framing these dialogues might be borrowed from "Mighty Ducks" or some other underdogs flick, but the movie has surpassed those films in almost every capacity, stealing the crown and paying homage only to "Rocky" itself as the king of underdog sports films. I really enjoyed this one, maybe more than it deserves, but I'm not ashamed to admit it.

peter h (br) wrote: Mill Creek's 50 Movie Pack: Chilling Classics Reviews HAUNTS / THE VEIL [1977]: Despite what the title might suggest (another ghost movie), HAUNTS from 1977 is a solid psychological horror film graced by the presence by Cameron Mitchell. Set in a small rural US town (which worked out well for the financial restrictions for the film's production) a young, religious woman called Ingrid starting for her safety with a serial Rapist & killer stalking several of the towns' women. When she is attacked in her backyard, bad things start to happen to her. THOUGHTS: For a low budget 1970's horror film, it's an alright film. A good twist here and there makes this film enjoyable. Decent performances make the film tick along, however it sadly isn't very memorable. 60%

Mike L (kr) wrote: Known for the dance sequence between Gene Kelly and Jerry mouse, a cartoon character, as one of the first movies to combine live-action with animation. As the title suggests it's a movie about a couple of guys on leave from their Navy ship in Los Angles around WWII. In many respects it serves as a recruitment skit for the Navy and lacks any real basis of a story, well the minimal plot of a guy trying to get a girl. It does get you to hear Frank Sinatra sing and see Gene Kelly dance, two icons in America entertainment so it cant be all bad despite a fairly formulaic story. The Mexican influence was ahead of its time and lifts this film above its vanilla contemporaries. Katherine Grayson is a vision and her voice is stunning. Sinatra plays a young naive sailor who looks up to Kelly for advice about girls. The two find Grayson's young cousin, who wants to be a sailor, and when they see Grayson, Sinatra falls for her and Kelly plays the worldly sailor who initially is disinterested in her and eventually falls for her. It starts out slow and picks up steam to become a very enjoyable movie.

Daniel S (gb) wrote: Some likable characterization and relationship-building is probably the main strength of this otherwise rather unremarkable and cliche alien invasion story, and unfortunately, for various story reasons, that strength ends up largely wasted. Beyond that it's largely plot hole filled cut-and-paste sci-fi cliches at best, and plot hole filled cut-and-paste Storytelling 101 cliches at worst.
