The Birth of a Nation
The Birth of A Nation is a silent film from 1915 and the highest grossing silent film in film history. The film tells a romance story during the American civil war. D.W. Griffith invested heavily in its high production values, pioneering many new camera effects. The Birth of a Nation was strongly protested for its negative portrayal of newly freed slaves (mostly white actors in blackface), which went on to create and propagate negative images of blacks of the early 20th century in the United States. The film was used as a recruiting propaganda by the KKK until the 1940s.

(ca) wrote: It's very stylized, but in a clever and fun way. I am a bit shocked by the low ratings for this film, especially given its clever commentary and timing, too. Like any strange film, many people turn away. Tim Burton is especially known for this on his earlier filmmaking (less so later on). It isn't perfect, but it is smart and a lot of fun.

(es) wrote: Dragons Forever is a respectable action comedy that is even able to throw in some romantic elements. Jackie Chan does not do his best stunts, but it still fun to watch. The story is as standard as they come, but rarely do you watch these movies for that.
(ag) wrote: Silly circus melodrama involving a love triangle between Anne Baxter and a kindly high diver and a sleazy carnival barker. It's a completely dumb story and really the only reason to watch is for camp value. However, I did like the scenes where Baxter learns how to high dive. Those scenes felt like a magician revealing their tricks and were quite fun.
(jp) wrote: Armageddon has plenty of explosions, but also characters you don't care about in a movie that should be an hour shorter. Bay tries to deliver an emotional finale but just comes off as incredibly cheesy and out of place in an otherwise dull story.

(kr) wrote: I've seen this movie three times - the first time, I was too close to the book to appreciate the film. But years later, it is a gripping film with wonderful performances. It is an inspiring and demoralizing tale about dogged courage and perseverance. In the days of NSA and PACs, it is more important of a film than ever about the importance of independent and credible newspapers.
