(nl) wrote: This is one of those indie type films I'm actually glad I watched. It's very quirky, and had those moments that made you stop and think. When it started, I had my doubts, but Jesse Eisenberg helped pull me into the story. It's also got some 'laugh out Ioud' moments and some 'laugh out loud about a minute later' moments when you actually process the hilarity of some of the dialogue. I love the emergence of Jason Ritter, I think he's more talented than people give him credit for. I enjoyed seeing Jesse Eisenberg in a different type role and seeing Tippi Hedren in it was pretty cool too. Gammill and Beggarly make a good team, not sure if they're working on other stuff together, but there's definitely a market for these types of movies.

I saw this doc at Sundance where the director was obviously pro-Polanski in the Q&A and qualified the statutory rape of the child with comments about the girl's maturity for her age, that her mother had pimped her for a part, etc. Upon being asked how she would feel if her son had been similarly hurt, she said the thought never occurred to her. I won't be wasting my time on the sequel.

(mx) wrote: Anna Faris, as per usual, shines in a comedy that really just wasn't fleshed out nor funny.
(ag) wrote: The movie was a bit low budget, and the girls acting was just tolerable, but the movie itself and the message it sends is incredibly powerful. One of the most powerful movies I have seen in quite some time.

(mx) wrote: A provocative thriller, Stigmata is a powerful and well-crafted film that takes on deep issues. When a young woman in New York City begins to experience signs of Stigmata (the wounds of Christ), a Vatican investigator is send to look into the case; but the deeper he looks, the more troubling the case becomes. Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne lead the cast and give excellent performances. Additionally, the visual style is remarkably captivating and atmospheric. The score by Billy Corgan is also especially good, and enhances the dark and mystical tones of the material. Dealing with controversial spiritual and religious themes, Stigmata is a smart and thoughtful film that's intense and compelling.
(gb) wrote: Though it is an interesting study on the human mind and a slick combination of a variety of genres, the film isn't as special as it promises to be, as it suffers from some underdevelopment, some cheesiness, some overdrawn segments, a cop-out ending and underwhelmingness. Still, it is is supported by very good music, a strong story, compelling characters and a solid final act, in spite of the ending. Still, the real power behind this film is the drama led by Matt Modine and Nick Cage. The film explores a varity of subgenres of drama. The film touches on the friends' coming-of-age, experience in war and the terrible aftermath of this war. The film explores genuine human struggles in many shapes and froms and the transitions feel smooth and don't get in the way of the emotional impact, which still would have been stronger if the rest of the film wasn't executed so underwhelmingly. Oh man, I hate this review. This bad review should tell how underwhelming this is. I was really looking foward to this and yet, here we are. Still, "Birdy", though nothing too special, remains a moving portrait on friendship and the desire for freedom in many situations, led by strong performances from Cage and Modine.

He took a wonderful opera as his source of inspiration and turned it into this vomitous mass of excrement that passes itself off as "art"! HOW DARE HE!!! Georges Bizet must be spinning in his grave as I write this! You may always rely on Godard for comparing himself to artists he will NEVER be able to hold a candle to! WHAT A HACK!!! The man's nothing but an artsy-fartsy poser who dissimulates his lack of talent behind an accumulation of lofty cultural references! To whomever is reading this: do yourself a favor and listen to the beautiful opera instead... Or if you have time, read Prosper Mrime's novel - you won't regret it! But whatever you do, avoid renting this turkey at all cost!!!!!! (NOTE TO GODARD: You may think you are safe now... But I swear to God that Bizet will be avenged one day for this affront!)
