Doctor S (ru) wrote: "Are you two the fluffers?""No, we're the Balabans."A better lighthearted stab at developing romantic complications while making a pornographic film than Zack and Miri. I really liked Leelee Sobieski as Jody Balaban in this: she's not bitchy or whiny, she's just a driven, insecure aspiring filmmaker who sees her job as an editor at a porn studio as an opportunity to use their equipment to create her own vision of a love story, which in turn gets influenced by the lessons she learns from the actors and technical staff. Plus no use denying some guilty pleasure from hearing her husky voice saying those dirty words. Matthew Davis as her potential love interest is a little disappointing but the rest of the cast is pretty good, particularly Kristen Johnston who gets some good comedy lines and Jaime Kennedy and a denser-than-Dirk-Diggler porn actor. "You're the best director I've ever had, and I've done over 400 movies!" Denise Richards creates a surprise with her role too.Through Jody, writer-director Julie Davis communicates in a distinctive female (which does not mean feminist) voice, which provides an interesting & uncommon infusion of ideas within the context of adult entertainment. There are several continuity errors in the editing, the chemistry between the leads never feels quite right, and a way too standard feel-good ending don't quite topple some funny bits, well-written dialogue, and Leelee.

ka m (au) wrote: This film caught me in the right mood and I really enjoyed it - single righteous man in a sea of corruption has been done several million times, but this has a character all it's own probably because of a solid script from a good book. Trouble is with so many good comedy actors in major roles, I kept waiting for the laughs, (sometimes it looked like they were coming), which moved my focus off of the storyline too often. Still...not to be taken as seriously as it tries to take itself. Could use a lot less swearing. I've never seen a film where the swearing was so at odds with the characters - totally un-necessary here and kind of shoe-horned in when it occurs. Good casting except Parker - wasn't really suited for her!

Brandon M (de) wrote: My full opinion: I wouldn't say that this film got to me all the way through, but the story is good, Ennio Morricone's music is beautiful, and the cinematography by Nestor Almendros is really breathtaking, which i'm glad that it won an Oscar for that. 8.2/10
Wesley R (fr) wrote: Honestly, there's a good chance you're going to feel this film is dated and/or not care about a lot that is expressed in this film. I enjoyed the first part of the film as a documentary look at the impact of Wilhelm Reich, but found myself kind of bored by the latter half of the film. This is where the film changes from a documentary approach to a series of random interviews or vignettes intermixed with a storyline involving communism and its effect on sexuality that you'll get the point of within the first 5 to 10 mins. of its storyline and wonder how many times they'll keep mentioning it. Despite all this, though, you can't help but admire the collage-like structure the entire film has.

Allan C (br) wrote: Not the best written bit of science fiction, but amazingly atmospheric and crafted with some stunning visuals by director Mario Bava. The story revolves around a spaceship crew landing on a mysterious fog covered planet, when the crew begin to turn on each others after coming under the control of the planet and it's inhabitants. The story is only slightly better than the usual juvenile sci-fi from this period, but the film is visually head and shoulders above anything at the time. Re-watching this film now, I kind of wonder if this is a film that has worked it's way into the pubic unconscious, that that sets and costumes and look of this film are something that seems to reappear from time to time in variations. Overall, don't watch this for the story, but absolutely check it out for the Mario Bava visuals.
