20/05/16 - 04:31 pm
Darrie G (es) wrote: I stumbled on this accidentally needing inspiration and looking for 'A Chorus Line'. It is a fascinating documentary about the casting of 2008 revival of said show, whittling down 3000 (professional and amateur) hopefuls through a gruelling series of auditions and recalls, over 8 MONTHS (!!!) and resulting in a nailbiting final audition. This is not done for the sake of television entertainment, but a normalish audition process, conducted by top class production team, and culminating in seasoned professionals being repeatedly recalled, and some rejected at the last fence. The making of the original 'A Chorus Line' was in itself a theatrical landmark based on what is called now 'Verbatim' theatre, and at the time using a new process called 'workshop' - now a term liberally applied to any kind of audition in which the performers stick around for longer than about 20 minutes. And it dealt with the incredibly hard lives of working broadway dancers 'gypsies' and the realities are nailed home again in this real-life audition process. The realities can be applied to any working entertainer, who, in order to secure a coveted paid job, (in this case on Broadway) will be subjected over and over again to a few minutes testing, pouring out 110%,- to obtain their moment in the sun. As one performer (a seasoned broadway veteran who did a two year in 'Fosse' says 'there are going to be 100 no's for one yes'). In an unbearable moment, she summons one of the audition panel and demands to be given the result rather than have to wait for it (who hasn't wanted to do that!). She gets a 'no', and you feel for her, but her rival gets a 'yes' and the joy is palpable. As another performer puts it on her way to the finals 'this is not for the weak-hearted'. In a way it kind of inspired me, because these people are at the top of their game and still go through the same feelings as the rest of us!My only criticism is that they focused on the 3 female principals rather than the boys who were awesome and you didn't even get to see which boys got cast in the end.

Carson B (kr) wrote: The Chamber of Secrets is way too long, and after a while you just want it to end. Nevertheless, it starts out as a better better movie than the Sorcerers Stone, as the book, and is still exciting and fun; if not the most childish of the series.
Simon D (gb) wrote: George Best's biopic. How alcohol, women, and gambling ruined the prospects of one of the UK's most promising footballers. This film would have been better being made ten years later after Best had drank himself into a liver transplant and then went out and drank himself to death, then this film would have been about addiction rather than a playboy. The casting was pretty spot on, especially for the other players.
