That same character I believe walked past the duel in the background then to reappear after the fact and shoot himself. And I noticed so many bits of business like the bully putting his hand on Pedro during the skittles scene. And the close whispering in the ear. These and so many more seemed to have been nuggets from the boy's early experience and expanded into the many tales told later. And it seemed to me that Elisa bore an uncanny resemblance to Angela. The wild coincidences such as Don Alberto's men shadowing Pedro as he wandered the world giving money seem the wild imaginings of a lost boy in search of his own identity. And it seemed to me that Pedro seemed to be enjoying narrating his tale to someone who may or may not have been capable of such a huge feat of dictation. And then to have the adult boy appear upside down on his bed with Father Dinis and his sister(?) or wife(?) Antonia come in and find him "cold" or dead was truly baffling yet led me to believe that none of what I had seen was real and was the boy's wishful self-narrative of his own longed for identity. Seen this way, it all makes perfect sense to me. Seen as real, it seems completely impossible both logistically and logically. All together too much to accept as remotely possible yet wildly exhilarating as storytelling. Am I off base? Anyone have a different take?
