The Coca-Cola Kid
An eccentric marketing guru visits a Coca-Cola subsidiary in Australia to try and increase market penetration. He finds zero penetration in a valley owned by an old man who makes his own soft drinks, and visits the valley to see why. After "the Kid's" persistence is tested he's given a tour of the man's plant, and they begin talking of a joint venture. Things get more complicated when the Coca-Cola man begins falling in love with his temporary secretary, who seems to have connections to the valley.

(es) wrote: really mediocre, except.....someone suggested this is the final in the Lloyd Dobler trilogy (Cusack's character from Say Anything). Part 2 being Grosse Point Blank where the unusual kid from high school gets recruited into being a hitman. Part three here is a character very obviously trained as a killer, but having fallen on hard times and reduced to doing pick up jobs for an equally odd kingpin. At that level the movie became somewhat interesting. Not enough to pull it into good, but enough to change a one star rating into 2.5.

This film is all about Nicole Beharie and her powerhouse performance. She absolutely becomes this character and, whether she is screaming at her ex-husband or quietly intimidated in prison, each line is delivered with poignant urgency. I really enjoyed the script as it brought full disclosure to the unjust racism in our society. The dialogue flows from start to finish and creates some amazing movie moments along the way, none better than Michael O'Keefe's racist outburst during his deposition. Be prepared for an emotionally-charged experience when you turn on "American Violet" as it dives into life in the projects and a darker side of the justice system.

(fr) wrote: I'm really surprised at the low ratings for this little jewel. I guess it's a matter of perception. I found this movie refreshingly funny from beginning to end. It has a markedly unamerican sense of humour. Sam Rockwell is great in the lead role, but all the characters have been superbly cast. The cast alone makes the movie more than worth your while, but should also serve as an indication that this movie is heavily underrated. The likes of William Macy and George Clooney rarely accept to lend their name to below average projects.
