Hannah S (it) wrote: For such a short running time, this takes far too long to get going. And once the potentially interesting idea comes to fruition it is quickly wasted. The concept is poorly formed and with cut out characters it becomes a matter of working out the order of (not that good) kills... The great JK Simmons pops up for a tiny cameo - had there been more of him this could've been better!

Takes place right after WWII, with best friends, John Grady(Matt Damon) and Rawlins(Henry Thomas) craving for the old western life. But when mom agrees to sell the huge ranch property to the oil companies, so that she can retire to sunny side California, the two then decide to head across the border to Mexico so that they can continue their rustling life. And they end up taking in an underage 16 year old runaway, named Blevins(Lucas Black) unaware what is waiting for them. Although, the movie has an ending, the entire journey seems so artificial. 2 out of 4 stars

Douglas L (gb) wrote: Better than what I originally had watched. A weak premise and somewhat weak pacing, it made up in great effects on the infected and also the dark textures in the film. Not the Rock or Urban's finest roles, but it does give off some good cheese and bad assery.

So many details were altered and I didn't understand why they fully assumed that Lee was killed by a demon curse. And the at he broke his back? Way too much was altered for my taste. That's a pretty bold statement to make, especially since it's the less likely way he died. The actor had Lee's physic which impressed me, but his portrayal of Lee didn't. This movie focused on all the wrong things about his life. 2/5

Jenna I (jp) wrote: A love triangle between a man, his trumpet and heroin. This is one of those movies where the last five minutes really nails it home. As for the rest of the movie, the acting is uneven and it tends to veer towards cheesy too often to be truly solid-- where Love & Mercy got the flashbacks right, Born To Be Blue fluffs them too much to take seriously. I could have done without the forced love story... While I appreciated the limp attempts at making Jane three dimensional you spend most of the movie wondering what the character herself straight up asks: "what do women see in you?" That said, it's an interesting journey with great music. And those last five minutes... Phew.
