Otageemeur L (au) wrote: "Steel Magnolias" is a drama about a Southern family, the Eatenton, especially between Shelby and her mother M'Lynn. However, this drama will also turn around M'Lynn friends and how they will help her to deal with the struggling sickness of her daughter Shelby. The movie is really oriented around those six women who all have to deal with the sickness of Shelby (played by Julia Roberts), the daughter of M'Lynn and try to console M'Lynn, played by Sally Field. Also the movie deals with the relationships between those women and how their life evolve within the time. Of course you have the beauty queen with Truvy (played by Dolly Parton), the frighten woman who will change into a more independant woman with Annelle (played by Daryl Hannah), the annoying and devilish Ouiser (played by Shirley MacLaine) and the widow but good living Clairee (played by Olivia Dukakis). In general, I thought the movie OK, the story is somewhat cliche but is still have a spark of emotions, especially thanks to the years going by in the movie and seeing how the characters evolves.

Allan C (nl) wrote: Poorly made Amicus Productions directed by the usually reliable Freddie Francis (who was also an ace cinematographer on films such as "Glory" and "Blue Velvet"). According to IMDB, Francis said that Amicus spent all their budget on another film, leaving virtually nothing for this film and forced them to reuse props and sets from other films. However, that's only part of the problem, the main problems being a boring script about British scientists investigating a meteor in the English countryside. It's really aliens who use their powers to control people's minds, but one scientist has a metal plate in his head which prevents them from controlling him. I suppose that story ins't too awful, but it's just boring and overly talky. Take a pas on this one. However, the best IMDB factoid for this film is that it was allegedly this was Anwar Sadat's favorite film.

Juha P (es) wrote: After just seeing the original and after the amazing Broadway (West End) version, I was quite worried about the remake. But, as usual, the Britons know what they are doing. This one was less slapstick and more realism (if possible) than the other two and it worked quite well. Directing, cinematography and editing were superb. I did have a slight problem with Rupert Penry-Jones though. Even if he would be the right age for Hannay, the years have treated him far too nicely and it is difficult to imagine that he has spent years in the Colonies. Otherwise typecasting worked jolly well and the actors were just as good as one can expect from a British production. Not as good as the original but definitely worth watching.

Andrew L (nl) wrote: The energy between Streep and Hathaway was great. A number of great moments. I actually didn't care for the message of the movie. But that's not what I cared about. I just cared about seeing what nonsense Streep was going to put Hathaway through and how she'd respond. The most ridiculous of requests got the greatest response. I laughed out loud for a long time at that. This is a very well done movie, chick-flicky message and girly fashion theme aside...
