The Cruel Sea
At the start of World War II, Cmdr. Ericson is assigned to convoy escort HMS Compass Rose with inexperienced officers and men just out of training. The winter seas make life miserable enough, but the men must also harden themselves to rescuing survivors of U-Boat attacks, while seldom able to strike back. Traumatic events afloat and ashore create a warm bond between the skipper and his first officer

(ru) wrote: This was not on my radar, but Rick wanted to see it. It is an interesting subject as Hitler wanted to destroy Paris, because he was in the throes of losing WW II. It is a conversation that takes place in one room between the German General Choltitz and Swedish dignitary Nordling. The intrigue is linked to the "how" and the words that were traded. Both men had a love for Paris, but Choltitz had his orders. So for about two hours you have a debate about loyalty and the futility behind the planned destruction. This wears on you in time. The screenplay is the play and the actors playing the two leads are top notch...however the play is stagnant. What compels you to stay with it is Paris itself. A romance that has not disappeared. This should have been better.

Get yourself to a theatre near you (well a theatre that's playing Hindi movies, which will probably not be near you, you'lll have to drive a bit, unless you live across from one.) and buy a ticket for "Luck By Chance". I was intrigued by the previews which I saw on B4U when I was back home for the holidays in my brother's basement; (I really didn't need to say that did I?) and I have to say the film is very enjoyable. Let me ask you a question. What do Hrithik Roshan, Dimple Kapadia, Sanjay Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar have in common? (you'll know this if you watch Bollywood movies, oh excuse me I mean, movies from the "Hindi Film Industry")They are all sons and daughters of actors, writers and industry related people. They all are also starring in "Luck by Chance". I find it ironic that one of the issues dealt in the movie was how difficult it is for an unknown actor to make it big, and here we have all actors who in someway have or had a connection in the film industry telling this story. Even our leading lady Konkona.Sen Sharma is the daughter of an actress-writer-director. (wow she got all three). Well at least they are telling good stories. The one person that is not, who really did get lucky is Isha Sharvani who got her break in Subash Ghai's "Kisna". She is absolutely adorable in this film. The multi talented Farhan is a wonderful choice for the lead. He has average looks but the potential to be great which works for this film. Konkona has become the Hindi film industry's Indie girl and once again delivers! Dimple Kapadia has never been better. In all her scenes she brings out a vulnerability that so many actors lack. Hrithik is gorgeous as usual and will entertain the pants off of you. The song "Baawre" is very catchy and will have you shaking you head all the way home. (side note: there is one line that the acting teacher says which I need to comment on. He says it is easy to make it in Hollywood, it is difficult to make it in Bollywood, you have act, sing and dance. First of all lets take out singing, no one really does that , unless they want to, its not required. second only a handful of actors are great dancers in Bollywood others just get by. Bollywood has actors mainly from India. Hollywood has actors from around the world coming and trying to make it, so not so much buddy!) From what I have experienced there are many scenes portrayed in this film that are true to life. For example, you show up to an audition and there are 50 actors there auditioning for the same role. I've even gone to the bathroom several times to get away from it all and clear my head. I was kind of nervous watching some of the scenes. The credit truly goes to the powerhouse team of Javed, Farhan and Zoya akhtar. Who have made an attempt to show something different and genuine. The film scatters around a bit to show what all different industry related people do, I would have preferred them to concentrate on 2-3 stories instead of 5-6 but Zoya Akhtar does to a great job of keeping it all together. I didn't mind any of the songs here either. They are all wonderful and moved the story along. The film is great but I loved the opening credits and the ending, it really hit home for me. Needless to say I walked out with satisfied smile on my face.
(es) wrote: This movie had so much potential. There are some truly hilarious and inspired scenes - especially from Jim Carrey. However, these scenes are lost in the shuffle of a plot that goes out of its ways to be contrived. I'm kind of glad I saw it for the moments that were funny, but it's an overall mediocre movie.
(ru) wrote: What could have been a simple story instead opts to become a hybrid coming of age/ghost tale. It tries too hard with too little - dramatic moments fall flat, the few scares offered don't succeed, and the film begins to fall apart half way through. Ultimately, we cannot sympathize with the character because the film can't keep its act together - we go from youths admiring a young baton twirling girl to a ghostly drowning scene in the span of five minutes. While the combination of elements offers a fresh approach to standard themes found in other coming of age tales, it does nothing new with the material.
(ru) wrote: When I first put the movie in, I wanted to turn it off after about 10 minutes. I decided to give it a chance and at the end of it all, I can say that I may possibly have enjoyed it. I really like the plot of this movie. Give this movie a larger budget, a better cast, and a great director such as Spielberg or someone along those lines, and I guarantee they could turn it into an amazing overall. Sit down and give it a chance and look beyond the mediocre acting and cinematography, and you may like it just as I did.

So man enjoyable moments, and you can't deny that Jojo is the best, I just couldn't stop smiling or laughing whenever he was on screen. I also loved the scene when the older student is doing his math homework at home and his whole family is around him trying to figure it out as well. And the photocopier scene. And the hand washing. And... Another thing I loved about the film is that the only time the filmmakers were ever really acknowledged/when they interviewed someone was near the end when the teacher was interviewed alone outside the school. The rest of the film was just a fly on the wall style. A very fun film.

Bava's impeccable use of strategic lighting and vibrant colors establish right away that this picture has an ethereal quality to it, complete with beautiful Gothic designs.
