The Devil-Ship Pirates

The Devil-Ship Pirates

A pirate ship, fighting in 1588 on the side of the Spanish Armada, suffers damage and must put into a village on the British coast for repairs. The village is small and isolated and the Spanish convince the villagers that the English fleet has been defeated and that they, the Spanish, are now their masters. This results in the villagers' sullen cooperation, but rumors and unrest begin to spread and soon the Spanish pirates find themselves facing a revolt.

Bill B (nl) wrote: Stylized wackiness plays homage to both the slasher genre as well as the corny beach movies of the '50s, with a dash of the film noir femme fatale thrown in for good measure - this one definitely holds up well on the repeat viewing and is a helluva lot of fun.Recommended.

Lenard K (us) wrote: A prospector along with his deaf-mute daughter, an adventurer, a priest and a prostitute flee into the jungle in order to escape from a corrupt Latin American government. A French-Mexican movie from Bunuel that contains a few scenes that presage his more famous movies, but that tells a fairly straight-forward story. Movie is also notable as the first time that Piccoli appeared in a Bunuel movie.

Robbie N (de) wrote: Definitely overrated, as it lacks in being able to sustain an hour and a half of solid entertainment, and instead fluctuates on the standard of it's humour and story progression. Big has a good enough story revolving around it, but doesn't seem to execute it to it's full potential, as I'm sure a few other films with the same idea have been able to. Tom Hanks definitely brings his best performance to the table, and perhaps not"Oscar- worthy" is still ridden with charisma and charm. Perhaps I had too greater expectations, because is it simple and entertaining at various times, but Big lacks too much in depth and general entertainment, and is a bit too light and fluffy to really engage the viewer for the full running time.
