The Distance

The Distance

Daniel, a young boxer on the point of winning the title several times, is beaten yet again and commits a robbery that lands him in jail. Guillermo, a self-destructive policeman tormented by his latent homosexuality, blackmails Daniel into committing a murder behind bars. In exchange, Daniel gains his freedom and returns to the only thing he knows how to do: box. But this time the search for pain to relieve the guilt has made his conservative style more aggressive. He remembers the last conversation he had with the man he killed, when he talked about his wife, just another whore in the club he ran, and goes to meet her. Seeing danger in the relationship between the victim's murderer and his widow, Guillermo tries to stop it.

Jeremy C (gb) wrote: A cute and fun and humorous film. But the humor mostly goes for the kids and not much for the adults.GRADE:C+

Lucas W (es) wrote: Otis was an interesting movie with an AMAZING premise, unfortunately it's turned into much more of a comedy film than a more tongue in cheek comedy that I was hoping for. Pretty good performances by most people (especially the father), pretty good directing, with a sadly weak story and writing. The first half of the film is much much better than the second half, especially once they get to Otis's house, it really goes downhill there. It still entertained me, but just barely. 5/10

Steven L (ru) wrote: a beautiful, heartwarming movie with an excellent Clive Owen.

David S (gb) wrote: Interesting story about a woman dealing with age and with her diminishing sexual power, through the outlet of a new play. Rowlands is worth the sometimes obvious pit stops that the plot makes.

Scott S (it) wrote: The Young Philadelphians (1959) -- [5.5] -- Paul Newman stars as a lawyer who rises to power through the manipulations of his mother and other socialites. He finally finds his own voice and something worth standing for when an old friend is put on trial for a murder he didn't commit. Newman is always charismatic, but his character here lacks a strong internal mechanism to move the story forward (at least until the final act). Tabloid elements litter the script (based on Richard Powell's novel), keeping believability at arm's length. The best parts of the movie were a light-hearted subplot involving a goofy millionairess played by Billy Burke, never put to better use since "The Wizard of Oz," and a third act confrontation between Newman and his unrequited love, played by Alexis Smith. Robert Vaughn was Oscar-nominated for his supporting turn as the wrongly accused, alcoholic, wounded war veteran (how's that for Oscar bait?) The cinematography and costumes were also nominated.

Panayiota K (kr) wrote: Did this become a cult only because of that one line? I found it boring. Bette Davis was cool though.
