The Dream Children
Alex wants to become a father. Steven, his partner, has to confront his insecurities and fear of change after a lifetime smothered by superficiality. Unable to adopt legally, but still eager to become parents, they decide to turn to the black market, adopting a child from a desperate young woman, who's return with a dangerous new boyfriend, threatens to destroy everything they love.
Troubled TV personality Steven Evans struggles to find meaning in his life in the face of the superficial world he has created. Smothered by celebrity and materialism, Steven's only respite is through solitary visits to the ocean and shallow sexual encounters with the acquaintances that orbit his life. When his long-term partner hurls him headfirst into fatherhood, Steven's initial reluctance is gradually replaced with love, as he discovers, in his new family, a bond stronger than any he has experienced before. But the return of an unexpected visitor triggers off a series of events that thrusts Steven and his family into a cycle of loneliness, self-destruction and grief. . Can't wait for The Marine 18 1/2 where The Miz son fights off terrorist holding his parents captive while wearing an American flag onesie.

(gb) wrote: This is fascinating if you are happy to watch the subtleties of human behavior. In a largely static narrative the attention is successfully maintained by flashbacks to a somewhat weird and repressed youth in the lives of Anthony and his undergraduate girlfriend Veronica. In the elderly phase of their lives they are portrayed by Broadbent and Rampling, as pretty annoying people, edgy, awkward and rather, well like they are anyway. Charlotte Rampling, watchful, uncommunicative, and inscrutable behind a chillingly cold stare, while Jim Broadbent plays his usually irascible self, alternating between grumpy old man and making somewhat gauche remarks and revealing to his ex wife things that were better left dead and buried in his youthful past. Their past is the centerpiece of the plot where the young Anthony is even more gauche and awkward in the relationship with his university girlfriend and this develops into a rather dark story of infidelity and tragedy which was destined to remain a secret until Anthony received a letter about a diary that had been left to him in a will.Despite some irritating personality traits in the main characters, the saving grace is the denouement of the story in which the rather unexpected twists supply a redeeming and thought provoking finale to this intriguing human drama and packs some moralistic and philosophical notions about the way we live our lives.
