(us) wrote: Majid Majidi's "Baran" The release of "Baran" on DVD is yet another example of how a fine film that got very limited release theatrically in North America can now finally reach a much broader audience. It made an appearance at the New York Film Festival, got a weeklong qualifying Oscar run in December in two theaters and then made an appearance again in May in a handful of theaters before going into obscurity. The film is about sacrifice and unrequited love between an Iranian young man and an Afghan refugee. Here, director Majid Majidi's efforts show with the film's striking cinematography, solid performances and memorable images. We get a rare glimpse about the culture and its people in this part of the world that we normally don't even know or hear about especially from today's Western media. "Baran" is enriching and emotionally satisfying. The recent slate of films coming out of Iran as of late has been quite impressive.

Peter Sellers and Victor Mature give amazing performances. The screenplay is good but a little slow in places. Vittorio De Sica did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the humor. After the Fox is a must see.

I suppose because it violates a couple rules of romantic comedy. First, not only are the principles married but have a child that is very present. The second, even more unforgivable violation is the couple is very happy with each other at the beginning, at the end, and at every point in between. No obligatory split-up about an hour into the flick like in almost EVERY OTHER ROM-COM MADE.
