The End of Silence
Centers on the Klein family, who live in a remote house in the mountains. Considered the black sheep, youngest son Jean is thrown out. Angry and threatening, he arrives at Nils and Ida's chalet for a hunting expedition. The next day, he learns how to kill. The following night, his mother's car is set on fire and he is blamed. He disappears into the mountains with a gun. On the third day, it pours down with rain and, in the evening, a storm brews. Shut up in their house, the Klein family await with dread the return of Jean, who will challenge them, weapon in hand.

(jp) wrote: Fairly amusing, but the ending is too easy to be guessed at the middle of the film. And I don't think the characteristics of the main casts make them a great partner in a romantic relationship.

(br) wrote: A brooding tale of three musically-gifted daughters and their star-crossed plans for marriage.A remake of Four Daughters (1938) -- with one daughter thankfully removed without consequence here -- the downbeat plot hardly matches the bright kodachrome packaging.Lorrie Tuttle (the always-sunny Doris Day) shuns the respectable Alex (Gig Young) for troubled songwriter Barney Sloan (a pall-stricken Frank Sinatra) to predictably dour results. Sinatra and Day sing well, and the title track is a keeper but the final outcomes are flawed. That Lorrie marries the morose Barney is incongruous enough; but the fact he survives his suicide attempt for a fairy tale ending is completely against the run of play, and difficult to swallow for a film whose soundtrack will likely prove more durable than the proposition itself.
(ca) wrote: This third entry in the popular Thin Man series gets a little more silly, but William Powell and Myrna Loy still have that charm. It's the same old whodunit with Nick searching for clues and the killer not being anyone suspected. The addition of Nick and Nora's son makes the film more family orientated, but there is still a lot of detective work to be had.Grade: B+
(it) wrote: Slow and too talkative early on and not quite as atmospheric as other early Universal horror. It does have some effective moments though and some pretty decent effects for its time including the earliest depiction of a CCTV camera that I've seen which obviously wasn't invented and put into use for a good few decades afterwards.
