Trent R (kr) wrote: Went ahead and watched this without subtitles, since it is a Chu Yen-Ping film and logical sense is not the objective. It was very fun, packed with the usual cigar-chomping, hard-drinking heroines, running battles combining vehicles and horseback, and an array of silly fur hats. The approach is one of free collage, mixing genres and time periods according to the notion that if one genre is good, then all of them at once will be fantastic. And it was pretty fun, despite Jay Chou's bland presence. Eric Tsang gets wack-a-doo, and Chen Daoming eats something resembling peyote and goes nutzoid. The desert setting allows for some pretty broadly wire-assisted battles, and this is definitely Ching Siu-Tung's looser and more stylized mode of work. But the sweeping vistas are a nice distraction, and good contrast to later interiors. The last act has the only real treasure-hunting per se, with them moving indoors for a more CGI-intensive set piece. This is pretty cheesed out entertainment, but it is cool to see that the director of films such as Fantasy Mission Force, Pink Force Commando, and Shaolin Popey 1-2 still very much knows his audience and can deliver flicks that succeed as popular entertainment.

Richard C (mx) wrote: Benji and Chevy Chase share top billing in the sappy story about a dead guy who comes back in Benji's body to solve his own murder. Jane Seymour looks good though.

Jim M (ag) wrote: I don't understand how this movie was ever nominated for any award. The different parts of the movie do not relate to each other and it jumps haphazardly from scene to scene and thought to thought.
