I was glad that it gave some of the opposition's viewpoints while still focusing on the figure of Morales and his circle of campaigners and supporters. There is nothing very profound about the film; it is more of a document of what happened. This said, it would be a very useful teaching tool to demonstrate how populism actually work and how populists from the proletariat rise to power, often through unions.

Todd S (ca) wrote: Oh wait I know why this film has a rotten rating, because Josh Hartnett is a pretty boy, who whenever he gets a good shot in front of the camera sits there like a dumb log, with his head up his ass

Serge L (ru) wrote: The film is nice, but the extras shows that the film is significantly different from the true story. The town and the mine really helped the kids all along. As a kid, I tried myself to make rockets and they were not flying high at all. I did not make a good batch of black powder, after my good batch went in flame... The footages they have of their rockets are quite impressive. The film added some drama to keep interest, otherwise, it would have been the documentary in extras. The documentary is great and depicts a lot of things in the film happened as shown. The film is a pass if you watch the extra documentary.

Ken S (au) wrote: Burt Lancaster and Susan Saradon are both quite good in this tale about an old man who worked for the mob when he was younger, and gets himself embroiled with them again when he helps out a young idiot who stole drugs from the mob. It is an entertaining movie that isn't your typical gangster movie. It is unique, well-made, and worth seeing.

Richard D (br) wrote: There is so much that I like about this film, it ends up being a shame that I don't ultimately like the movie itself very much at all. The plot is fairly simple. Two guys rob a mob run poker game and a hit man is brought in by the higher ups to fix the situation. The film doesn't care a whole lot about this plot. It unfolds gradually, and it's handled well, but most of the screen time is taken up by conversations between characters that don't have a lot to do with this plot. A lot of actors do superb work here. Ben Mendelsohn and Scoot McNairy play the two guys who rob the game, and they each turn in very different, wonderfully eccentric performances. Each is a joy to watch. Brad Pitt plays the hit man. Pitt is rarely this good. He's at his least mannered best hear. Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta also have key roles and are superb. This should be a wonderful film, but it somehow seems to be a lot of guys doing great work for no real reason. The film tries to tie it's themes to the recent financial crises ... boy does it try hard. Almost every scene has a new report in the background going on and on about bankers and crises and bailouts ... and none of it really means anything in the context of this story. I enjoyed watching it, but it also felt like a waste of my time.

Allen G (de) wrote: Another film where Nicholson just seems to have been born for the role. It's a deeply unpleasant film in many ways but there's a lightness and spirit to it that Nicholson perfectly encapsulates. A true classic. With a story as powerful and compelling as this one, it is difficult to go wrong. Its drab and dreary setting is filled with interesting and unique characters and there's so much depth and complexity behind the curtains of what is really a quite simple story line. The richness of the source material just forces its way through- the film is subtle as it simply tells a story and slowly lets the message become stronger and stronger until it unavoidably hits home. The dramatic lows of this film are never cheap and the emotion that you feel is never unearned. This film wins you over with its strongest element for me being its villain- Nurse Ratched. Never has another character been as effective at making me as angry as she does. The calmness which exists throughout much of the film does begin to limit it though as it can feel rather slow. Its story is fairly simplistic and you might find yourself having to look for the deeper context yourself at times as it isn't always as pressing as it could be. Again, I think there is a subtlety there that I enjoy but I think this one could still have been a bit more rambunctious at times. There is something quaint about it now that doesn't quite live up to the reputation that it has gained. I always think of this as a somewhat PG-rated 'A Clockwork Orange'- it doesn't have all of the same on-screen wallop, but its heart is just as dark and fathomless.
