Huy I (ca) wrote: Awesome movie. Granted, i'm biased. I have read the book; but mainly, i enjoy watching mean girls being mean and kick-ass kicks ass. The movie does an even better job than the book in pacing and storytelling - the movie is faster, gripping, and action-packed. In return, it might appear to be too hasty and consequently confusing to some (to me it's perfect though.) For this reason i recommend watching the movie only after reading the book.

Raji K (ru) wrote: Sandra Bullock stars in Forest Whitaker's Hope Floats. Bullock is Birdee Pruitt, a woman that goes through a terrible moment. She finds out on a talk show that her husband has been cheating on her with her best friend. Devastated by this, she decides to pack up her things and head back to her hometown of Smithfield Texas to live with her mother.Unmotivated and crushed, she's not able to even be able to get herself out of bed in the morning. She gets encouragement from her mother, and she tries to pick up the pieces of her life. This isn't easy as even applying for a job, she does not have much skills and she was not kind to the girl in high school who runs the job postings office. She has a man that she has a history with Justin (Harry Connick Jr.) that is interested in her, but she does not feel the timing is right for a relationship. Her daughter too misses her father and lashes out at her mother and frequently blames her for her current situation. Birdee must weather the storm and find herself. Hope Floats is an interesting romantic movie that although has some typical Hollywood elements, it for the most part breaks from the happy go lucky romantic movie. This is not a movie where everything works out perfectly and everyone is happy. After a crushing blow, Bullock's character does not simply instantly find love at first sight and move back with her life in a simple step. Instead the film does a great job pacing the comeback as a struggle. She does not instantly find the job of her dreams and instantly find herself right back at home. She instead is constantly looking to keep her head above water and simply float. With her dad having Alzheimer's and her mom keeping her on her toes, it is not like she has easy pillars to lean on for recovery. The recovery is also not gradual and easy, it has many ups and downs and is quite a rollercoaster. Hope Floats was a surprisingly real and honest movie that could depict many people's lives as they go through life's setbacks. The film has the impression of being a breezy and light romantic comedy, and this is far from the truth which may unsettle many, but for me I thought this was a fresh romantic film fueled by a good performance by Bullock. -2.19.2017

Eric V (de) wrote: Really cheesy action film with a terribly bad CGI sea creature that doesn't look like he's in the same frame with the actors. Some good character actors keep this from being a total waste.

Aaron G (br) wrote: Through no fault of its own, I was unable to enjoy it simply because so many movies have copied it that I found the whole thing tame and predictable.

Guy H (us) wrote: While the film whitewashes over important racial issues, How The West Was Won is a thoroughly enjoyable and thrilling epic western thanks to it's impressive use of Cinerama and Alfred Newman's best film score.

Jacob G (es) wrote: It isn't an easy watch, but this film is an insightful look at relationships, family, and death. It uses symbolisms and situations of the protagonist to be one of the most resonating movies ever.

Jack G (ca) wrote: 1) the star power here doesn't triumph over the script, but it does enhance some decent material to be highly entertaining stuff of the second name of the title (all three, Gable, charming as fuck, Powell, a much different turn than the Thin Man but just as awesome, Loy, who is spellbinding) fine and believable and make the stuff... human And even raw)spoiler:2) isn't it kind of ironic that Dillinger saw THIS movie, with Gables character and what happens to him, and then met his end immediately after ?

Mandela W (nl) wrote: Hollywood is one of the most legendary places in the world next to times square in New York. All kinds of stories and myths have come from here, good bad and ugly. Map of the Stars looks at the dark and twisted myth that some believe out in tinsel town. The movie starts out with a girl named Agatha arriving in Hollywood she comes with the hopes of mending her relationship with her estranged family which includes her spoiled brat of a brother benji and budhhist father Stafford. Agatha in the meantime gets a job with failing actress Havana Segrand. The lives of all these individuals are explored in this dark tale directed by David Croneberg. Its so relevant to everyone's dreams in cali and makes mentions of the biggest events and names in Hollywood such as the Oscars and Carrie fisher and many others. It gets dark pretty quick little disturbing at times too. It explores not only themes of darkness but also spirituality hence the use of Buddhist exericises, incantations and beliefs. Overall David Croneburg directing is incredible including with this shot selection. The music is really solid. The acting was really good. Julianne moore goes out there for this role as havanna a washed up actress struggling to make it back to some level of success. Mia wasikowa is impressive here. she is becoming a real master at playing mysterious girls her acting ability is slowly catching my attention. Evan Bird actually ended up being a standout amongst this cast. He is very spoiled stuck up kid but he got some deep issues that relate to the bigger themes explored in this filmIt has quite the ending. Map to the stars is a really well crafted film that's worth checking out.

Lenny R (it) wrote: Could have done with a bit more suspense, but it's fun watching this trio of actors bounce off each other. Robbie's voice with that hillbilly accent kept reminding me of Jaime Pressly in My Name is Earl.
