(ag) wrote: It could've been a top film about a disgustingly arrogant and obnoxious prick. But hell no in the last 5 minutes they have to go and transform this coward into a god. The criticism of consumerism was added abruptly, and absolutely unnecessarily, in the hope to boost the film up with a moral high ground. And the effect is fatal. Before the second ending the film remains entertaining, while the subtle cynicism keeps it going as a blackish comedy. The alternative advert they secretly make could've been for the sake of art - it could've earned the character some depth and sympathy. But no, it takes a sharp turn to attack advertising and tile roof in order to give the film a righteous subject. Such a pity, as it's otherwise a bold and visually stimulating film.

The president's recklessness reminds me of the dangerous times we live in, partcularly of George W Bush's cowboy personality. Unfortunately, the end seems like wishful thinking. The 2000 version of Fail Safe, though was much better and must NOT be missed for its excellent story line and great cast - 5 stars! For some reason it's not on the Flixter database.
