Matt R (es) wrote: This is the stuff great survival horror is made of. The low-budget feel elicits a true sense of helplessness -- something that most genre pics fail to do. Sadly, some poor dialogue and a rushed ending keep it from being a classic.
Richard C (fr) wrote: Its like reading from Homage to Catalonia, only the POUM didn't have the odd anarchist flag and scarves around, still good script and cast.
John C (ag) wrote: Great movie starring Arnold Stang. That's right. This is before he became famous. His accent was so thick I couldn't understand some of his words. The original version they actually dubbed his voice with another actor, but then went back later and added his in when he became more famous.

If you've been around a while, you've heard the Cuckoo Clock speech and the haunting theme song. If you're somewhat well read about movies, you know that Orson Welles is showing up eventually, which kind of kicks the wind out of that particular plot twist.Still, it was exciting to finally watch it after all these years. Wonderful character performances from the cast, fascinating camera work. You can tell that Carol Reed was heavily influenced both by Welles' own innovations and by the Italian neo-realists. Characters casually clamber through the beautiful remnants and ignored brickheaps of post-war Vienna, divided by Allied powers and as yet untouched by the Marshall Plan. You'd never imagine sewers could be so dramatic.Movie acting styles were not yet influenced by the Method school that would soon come. Joseph Cotten probably came off reasonably well by 1949 standards as the sulky alcoholic Holly Martins. I couldn't help wonder what a more brooding presence of someone like Montgomery Clift might have offered the role. Still, this is a bucket list movie. Checked.

Joey F (de) wrote: Kubrick... how are you this good at movie making? How do you think so differently about this art form than everyone else? This film is not for everyone, but it is objectively a masterpiece.
OverPower L (ag) wrote: oh come on the movie is funny. and for the people that like to say "another chapter in american male infantile" just stop, its a comedy and its supposed to be infantile. what are we supposed to just be so serious all the time? give it a break
