Combining sublime surfing beaches with the raw energy, music and rebellion of teen culture, Newcastle tells the story of 17-year old Jesse who lives in the shadow of his older brother Victor's failure to become surfing's next big thing. Even when he's in his natural habitat of magificent surf breaks, Jesse's blue-collar future is reinforced by the coal barges that constantly line his horizon. Jesse has the natural skills to surf his way out of this coastal town and onto the international circuit but can he overcome his equally natural ability to sabotage himself? A momentous weekend away with his mates that includes first love and tragedy leads Jesse to discover what's really important." --Container slick.

Brett H (au) wrote: Quite possibly the most over-rated romantic comedy I've ever watched with a flimsy-as-hell plot and nothing at all happening beneath the surface; though it is salvaged by Tom Hanks' screen presence and the banter he has with his son. Watching this film today was like stepping back in time to the 50s when women were kept in a neat, little box and their only duties were to cook and clean; that's how ass-backwards this movie portrays women. Every single female character is a sappy, dependent, and unfulfilled woman who can only survive by being with a man and cries her eyes out watching romantic films; can you say stereotype? The main story is that Tom Hanks tragically loses his wife in a car accident and his son pimps him out over the radio to try and get him to move on with his life: great setup for the story, but it ultimately goes nowhere as we get Meg Ryan's character falling in love with him over the air and begins lying to her fianc so she can pursue this fantasy over and over again. And that's exactly what this film is; a fantasy that tries to convince you that this kind of world exists. As mentioned before, this film would've been a trainwreck if it wasn't for the talents of Tom Hanks who can make almost anything watchable and when he's on-screen the film works, but I checked out of this about halfway through as I found the cliches and stereotypes too unbearable; surprisingly this was directed by a woman too! I simply do not understand the love for this film.

Kiko E (mx) wrote: The final film Toshiro Mifune would make with Akira Kurosawa, one of the most fruitful partnerships in movie history. Red Beard is a not a samurai epic but a quiet, bittersweet swan song about a young doctor and his mentor Niige (Mifune) Niige runs a tight ship and is considered strict buy his staff but he is respected and beloved and has a kind heart despite his gruff exterior. The main protagonist of the movie is Noboru, fresh out of medical school. The young doctor doesn't want to work in the clinic and considers it beneath him. He was expecting a prestigious position as a head doctor for the shogunate and rebels at first. He is ultimately won over by the staff and the patients and discovers there's a lot to learn from them. There's a scene that feels out of place with the movies tone when Niige and his apprentice go to a brothel to treat a prostitute and discover a young girl forced to work there. Niige wants to take her away but the head mistress calls on a gang of thugs to stop the doctors. In typical Mifune fashion he kicks everyone's ass and breaks their bones then has the Noboru tend to them. A great movie that is a little over long at times with a 3 hour run time.

Jess L (mx) wrote: A brilliant melodrama from the late 30s with a beautiful and heartbreaking performance from Barbara Stanwyck. The name alone is divine, Stella Dallas. It's a powerful sounding name that also feels common, and so the character is established. Stanwyck is supreme in this trashy role of a mill worker's daughter who dreams of being something more, and when she can not transcend the classes she will do anything so that her daughter can. A beautifully filmed story that provides a glimpse into different classes of society in an era long gone.
