Harry W (au) wrote: With a talented cast lined up and an Academy Award nominated performance from Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Charlie Wilson's War is not a film I could skip out on seeing.I'm not the right person to look for when it comes to political films because I find myself easily bored by them, and this proved to be the precise case with Charlie Wilson's War. Charlie Wilson's War is a biopic, and that means it is expected to follow a formula in how it tells its story. Unfortunately, that is exactly what it does because Charlie Wilson's War is not an innovative film and introduces nothing new to the biopic genre either. It just follows its character through a lot of his political journeys, but it keeps the focus solely on that. We don't get much insight into Charlie Wilson as a person, more simply on how he contributed to Operation Cyclone. Instead of a character study, Charlie Wilson's War is solely a political study. Biopics have to be able to find a balance between focusing on who their character of interest is and what they do, but Charlie Wilson's War is more focused on the War Charlie Wilson caused than on Charlie Wilson himself. I know that the title suggests that, but I had hoped that at some point along the way Charlie Wilson's War would actually look into who Charlie Wilson is, and it just didn't do that which disappointed me. So Charlie Wilson's War doesn't really glamourise Charlie Wilson all that much.Charlie Wilson's War is a film more about talking than it is about doing, especially since the focus is on how a man contributed to Operation Cyclone. While the scenes that actually depict the operation are entertaining, the problem is that there are three areas that Charlie Wilson's War could have explored and yet it picked the most boring one. Instead of focusing on any of these themes evenly, Charlie Wilson's War puts emphasis on Charlie Wilson contributing to Operation Cyclone, and not him as a person or the operation itself and both themes are simply played off as subplots. This leaves the film feeling very shallow and feeling like not that much more than a series of political lectures. While the script is witty and supplies a lot of firm material to the cast, it is jam packed with too much politics for me to understand or care about. I don't usually find politics involved in war to be an innovative film concept, and that proved to be the case with Charlie Wilson's War. Charlie Wilson's War was simply too slow moving and boring for me to be entertained by, and its obsession with talking instead of its focus on doing managed to hit me without leaving me entertained. I did not live through the real events of Charlie Wilson's War, and they do not really interest me, and so a 100 minute film full of a bunch of uninteresting characters just talking about the Soviet War in Russia really did not inform me of the nature of it all that much or entertain me in the process, so it was clearly not a film that I favoured.I didn't even feel as if Charlie Wilson's War established when the story was happening. It's as if Charlie Wilson's War just expects you to understand the entire background of the story and go in simply to learn something more about it instead of to learn about it all. But due to my lack of knowledge on the subject I was not ready for the film and my lack of interest didn't help either. Charlie Wilson's War simply had too much talking for its own good, and it didn't clarify a lot of things to me which left me asking more questions than the film itself did.Charlie Wilson's War benefits in other areas with the primary one being the cast.Tom Hanks is good in the titular role of Charlie Wilson. Although it is not his best role to date, Charlie Wilson and tom Hanks benefit from each other because of the clear understanding that both of them have for the Soviet war in Afganistan. Tom Hanks delivers his lines with confidence and wisdom which reveals just how skilful he is in the role, and he interacts with all the other characters as if the universe of the film is the real universe. Tom Hanks makes Charlie Wilson's war more interesting thanks to his natural charisma in the role.Julia Roberts is also a capable foil. Establishing the right look for the character and being very attractive in the role, Julia Roberts makes it realy easy to understand how Charlie Wilson develops a love interest in her. And their scenes together are some of the most interesting in the film because they are both passionate actors playing dedicated characters, and it manages to bring them together in a way. The chemistry between them has a certain sense of passion to it and a little mystery too, and it is easy for audiences to be compelled by the two of them as a they make a good couple. Julia Roberts is really likable in Charlie Wilson's War.Phillip Seymour Hoffman is also terrific. Although it is no surprise to me that he gave a great performance, even up against Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts he refuses to be overshadowed in his scenes and stands tall, looking like Gust Avrakotos very well and delivering his lines with pride. Phillip Seymour Hoffman steals the screen whenever he is around in Charlie Wilson's War, and he is one of the central reasons to watch the film. He just continues to impress me.But despite its talented cast, Charlie Wilson's War is too slow and packed with dialogue which is focused on the contemporary setting of the story without giving it much background to actually explain to viewers what is happening and may leave them bored or confused as was the case with me.
