Josh S (ru) wrote: the film is accompained by a very moving score and an often captiavating cinematography. but alas, the drama becomes too serious for itself. the film does a great job at character development but instead of seeing any real change, ephinany or character reveresal, you're left pretty pissed off at the leads. christoffer, as well as maja, are cowards, afraid to fight for what they want, ready to settle for what's easier. christoffer doesn't want to save his marriage, he simply doesn't want his life to change, and that doesn't change in the end. he doesn't necessarily forgive his father but accepts that forgiving him or hating him simply changes nothing, almost an acceptance of an eternal sense of ennui about his life. (the final shot shows this as a metaphor for his acceptance of his own death, that's he's accepted being emotionless). perhaps i'm wrong and the truth is that he doesn't love maja, but it his halfass attempts to keep her only prove his fear of his life changing (which the film addresses) the constanst metaphor here is being lost in miscommunication (though Lost in Translation does a much better job at capturing this), and to attmept this, the film often attempts to reach it through brief shots at dark comedy but never quite gets it. if you're going to have actors attempt the "dead pan," pick ones that can actually pull it off. the film makes Prague seems so depressing (which i can understand, i took many lonely walks around those streets at night), but i guess it was a directors choice, but to achieve the mood they were going for they needed more people on the streets. walking up the steps towards the castle, there was one person on the steps other than the 2 leads, which i felt was an example of a bad choice. the streets should've been crowded, filled with happy people to emphaize the contrast of their desperation. perhaps it just boils down to being a film without a plot.
Nasu N (it) wrote: Excellent movie into the story of Johnny Cash, one of the greatest American musicians of the century. Joaquin Phoenix gives a superb performance and deserves the oscar just as much as Reese Witherspoon. The film gives a candid representation of the music lifestyle, and the struggles that Johnny Cash had to fight with. Just the music performances alone are really entertaining and fun. But the film takes many serious turns that are so powerful. In the end, this film is very loving and sweet but can be brutally emotional as well. You'll definitely enjoy it.
Daniel Y (ca) wrote: One of Quentin Tarantino's most underrated movies, Jackie Brown, while long, is very good and interesting. The characters are interesting and enjoyable, the plot, while sometimes not easy to follow, is very entertaining and interesting. Also, as with most Tarantino films, it has memorable lines and a really good script. So to anyone who hasn't seen it, I'm sure there is, to them I say go watch it, you won't regret it.

Trent R (ca) wrote: Bela's performance in this is actually quite good, despite the material being clearly inferior. Given the comedic nature and some very lengthy scientific monologues, he avoids the usual criticism leveled against him of being overly stagey. Instead, he appears naturally clever and in on the joke. The thing is, you have to sit through the unbearable antics and poor singing of the two worst Martin & Lewis imitators I have ever seen. Duke Mitchell's singing voice is actually improved by being projected through a gorilla mask, and one only wishes that Petrillo was similarly muzzled after being locked in with a lovelorn chimp.
Pramit R (fr) wrote: Super corny and filled with cliched aphorisms, but with clear direction. Fun fight sequences and sex montages. Lazy musical choices and overacting. And though the fighting scenes all seem forced, you can't make a Bruce Lee movie without it.
Dave J (br) wrote: His 'life' jumps from reality to reality and sometimes he is confused and sometimes you're confused. The jumping around offers little in definition or depth and through most of them I was not interested. And then it sort of but not really even happened, but because I already didn't care......eh.
Hrant B (ca) wrote: In the Heart of the Sea stars Chris Hemsworth as the first mate of the voyage of Essex from Nantucket. This movie is based on the true events based of the story of the angry whale Moby Dick. The storyline is very detailed in a great cinematic series of events. The events are foretold by Tom Holland, who is a young shipmate who survives The Who,e ordeal. Great cast, good script, wonderfully prepared and very enjoyable to watch.
