" Just hope that Cherilyn Wilson and Dylan Purcell don't show up; they'll ruin everything. Your dreams are more interesting, and make more sense, than "Parasomnia. Go back to sleep. The whole mess culminates with a scene that's almost too much of a cliche to watch. Timothy Bottoms also has a small role as Laura's doctor; it's a part that could have been played by anyone, and Bottoms is as wasted here as Combs; both appear to have needed a paycheck, albeit a small one. Volpe, played by TV regular Patrick Kilpatrick, is almost interesting, but by the end of the movie he's delivering such incredibly BS lines and going to such Rube Goldberg like machinations to do even the smallest things that he seems far too stupid to have accomplished everything he's alleged to have done. and she's played by such a terrible actress that one wishes she'd lapse back into her coma every time she opens her mouth. . . Laura herself, who we're told spends no more than a few minutes awake every so often, winds up spending all of her time awake when it becomes convenient for the story. He rambles on about wanting her purity late in the film, but given the context, it's no explanation at all. It's never explained why Volpe wants Laura or even why he would be aware of her existence. There are some very interesting scenes set inside of Laura's dream world, but the rest of the movie doesn't make a lot of sense. When a detective is murdered, his partner (played by Jeffrey Combs) is convinced that Danny killed him and comes after him. Danny has to take on Volpe while the police pursue him for the kidnapping. For some reason, Volpe is also in love with her and is manipulating her through her dreams. When record shop clerk Danny comes to visit his friend Billy in drug rehab, he wanders into Laura's room, falls in love with her and winds up kidnapping her so she won't be taken away for experiments. She's warehoused in the psychiatric wing of a hospital where, in the padded room next door, serial killer and hypnotist Byron Volpe is kept hanging from straps. Laura Baxter has a disorder that leaves her asleep most of the time. " His appearance in this stinker, though, is a pretty solid sign that it's all over. He had quite a good run, between his career in horror films in the 1980s and 90s to his role on "Star Trek: The Next Generation. Poor Jeffrey Combs

An average script is elevated by strong performances and effective close-ups. Cautionary fable turns into a heroic gesture with Southern culture put to the test throughout

I'd seen him in later films - he must have been typecast in this film. Lew Ayers does a superb job as the younger brother of Hepburn. However, this is the most worthy use of this set I've seen. It's humorous - even distracting - to see the "mansion" movie set that has been reused countless times. The transfer to DVD is superb. Classic Hepburn and Cary Grant

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within only transcends other bad science fiction films of its genre due to being built solely on breakthrough CGI, but today its easier to be seen as the poor quality film it is which lacks the spirit of the video game series that inspires it or the general spirit of a good film. In no way does that supply sufficient quality to a film that lacks storytelling or any other really necessary qualities. Things just never really feel alive in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and most of the time I felt more like I was staring at the loading screen of a video game with a low FPS rate and a lot of cutscenes that couldn't be skipped. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within feels more like an acid trip due to its visuals and all of its weird transparent colours in scenes. But in a day where the CGI is more significantly noticeable for its flaws, it's easy to see the poor story, lacklustre writing and generic characters put into creating Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. It seems like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within tries to hide its flaws underneath the visual effects. But it buys neither. I mean that's very common for films based on video fames, but one which has $137 million in its budget should be able to afford a good story or decent script. You'd get way more thrills from playing the actual Final Fantasy game than you would from watching Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and so fans of the game series are likely to be displeased. Also, the action scenes feel too much like a video game cutscene and lack any thrills. And they seem out of tune with the voice acting, because even though Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within boasts a really talented and broad voice cast, they are never in tune with the mood of the scene or with the state the characters are in, be it physical or emotional. The main negative element of the computer generated imagery is that the animation doesn't capture the facial expressions of its characters and so they always seem blank without displaying any real emotion, be it aggression, humour or even drama. But today, it is less impressive. Some moments in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within prove to be truly impressive and the film would have been incredible back on its release date in 2001. The entire film is build on CGI, and it has an authentic look to it and to its human figures. While the computer generated imagery doesn't match the quality of today's motion capture technology, it is pretty impressive. I was never such a fan of the Final Fantasy games, but as a visual experience, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within sounded very memorable and worth checking out

I would probably have given this only 2 stars, were it not for the acting chops of Al Pacino and Holly Hunter

The move to replace Peter Bogdonovich with a fictional character was the right choice at the time, but it'd be a better movie now to have the real director back as a character. The recent movie Lovelace seems to have been heavily influences by this movie, and another review on this site calling Star 80 "Bob Fosse's Boogie Nights" is also an apt description. Interesting to see it from the view of the boyfriend instead of from Dorothy. Eric Roberts gives a really good performance, as does Mariel Hemingway
