Buggy B (kr) wrote: Well this ended up being pretty good. It started out weak, kinda dry a little dull but developed into an engrossing and surprisingly suspenseful story. Its based on a true story following Stephen Glass, a young reporter for the New Republic whose up and coming career in the 1990's came to a screeching halt when it was discovered that he had fabricated many of his stories. Hayden Christensen plays Glass and I thought he did a great job; his character is annoying, whiny, simpering and constantly craving praise while preying on the good nature and sympathy of others. Not very likeable. When he gets caught out (by Steve Zahn & Rosario Dawson) watching him try to cover his tracks regarding fact checking, sources and phone #'s was fascinating, it kind of made me squirm.Peter Sarsgaard plays his editor, put in a tough spot because he wants to believe him and knows a shit storm is coming if indeed Glass has fabricated his stories but eventually the chain of events can't be ignored. There are some weird moments when Glass is fantasizing events so its kind of confusing as to what's real, I guess this is to show how much Glass believed his own lies. And I surprised myself with how much sympathy I felt for him in the end, his character is heartbreaking, so messed up. 1/5/15

The kids were brilliant, I loved all of them, especially Sanabel and the twins.. their stories were presented in a normal frame, yet nothing in their lives was normal.. their daily routines, their thoughts and reactions to things like checkpoints and sagregation were both intresting and insightful.. I recommend this movie for anyone familiar with the arab-israeli conflict or not, regardless of their political view of the conflict.

Christopher C (de) wrote: Some scenes are just ridiculous and the story is a little farfetched. The characters are over the top and a little on the comic side. There are some pretty neat actions scenes even if they are a bit ridiculous.
Lee M (kr) wrote: A fine Agatha Christie adaptation, made more watchable because of its all-star cast, but suffers by comparison with Murder on the Orient Express.

Matthew R (de) wrote: The film begins with 21-year-old Toni Simmons (Goldie Hawn) trudging across the road at night to post a letter. Subsequently, she returns to her apartment and attempts to gas herself using a "second-hand" stove. Fortunately, her neighbor, Igor Sullivan (Rick Lenz), smells the gas and rescues her from imminent death using rescue breathing, which evolves into a French kiss after Toni regains consciousness. The movie then moves to the cause of the suicide attempt. Toni's lover Julian (Walter Matthau), a dentist and philanderer, had previously told Toni that he has a wife and three kids, in order to avoid commitment issues. However, upon learning of the suicide attempt, he decides to rethink his bachelor status and to marry Toni, resulting in him needing a wife to divorce. In order to resolve his dilemma, Julian decides to ask Miss Stephanie Dickinson (Ingrid Bergman), his spinsterish Swedish nurse of ten years, to pose as his wife. At first unwilling, she ultimately accepts the role, since she has secretly developed a crush on Julian. Cactus Flower directed by Gene Saks is a very amusing film featuring three stars, Ingrid Berman, Walter Matthau, and a very young Goldie Hawn (Who won an Oscar for best supporting actress). The three central performances are very engaging making the audience hooked immediately. Hawn though is really what makes lifts this film into a golden comedic sucess. Cactus Flower is a entertaining, funny, and smart film, anchored by it's stars. Story: B+ Acting: A Direction: A Visuals: A- Overall: A- ***1/2 out of 4 stars

However, I didn't like it, and not because of the visual style of Ozu that was lacking, it was the story and the kids! Okay, so the kids are typical of Ozu, but they were absolute jerks for no reason! Jerks! And ugly to boot! Plus it almost seemed to have a pointless narrative; nothing of any importance really happens. And while it does, it doesn't matter. Meh! Plus the woman freaking out outside the classroom was distracting at the ending so maybe I missed something.
