Anthony K (jp) wrote: Excellent cast made charmless by a relentlessly dour tone. I'm not sure why they went with such a thoroughly unpleasant series of events strung together into a plot, as opposed to making use of its stars' natural comic gifts. But it doesn't work, and will just leave you feeling...bummed, man.

Together they're magic. Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle is certainly a labor of love for all involved. There probably isn't one person in this huge cast who couldn't command more money for one project than this whole movie cost to make. Dorothy Parker was always a fascinating character to me and this movie delves into her years as one of the shining lights of the famed Algonquin Round Table onto the end of her life. The look and feel of the period is captured perfectly. But even more important, the mood is right too. The screenplay is great, in no short part because it features many of the famous quotes these people were known for. Highly recommend.

Jonathan B (br) wrote: Rambo + Commando + a bit of Predator + a mullet + denim cut-offs = AwesomeIt looks to me as if someone saw a few films that were big in the 80's and gone "I can do that" and basically paid for it themselves, and didn't have a lot of money either. Trying to find sense is impossible so just enjoy it for what it is. Everything about it is bad, and yet it's still amazing.

Mark M (kr) wrote: Given the recent string of violent attacks that began with the assault on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo due to religious extremism, a look into this movie seems more than appropriate. Four Lions is a black comedy that serves as a satire on the jihadist movement by highlighting the absurdity of a group of British Muslims with dreams of terrorism. The movie follows a group of wannabe, jihadist idiots led by Omar (Riz Ahmed), his slow best friend Waj (Kayvan Novak), the high-strung Muslim convert Barry (Nigel Lindsay), the group's pushover Faisal (Adeel Akhtar) and newest recruit Hassan (Arsher Ali).Director and writer Chris Morris spent around three years researching everything he needed to know while writing the script, even going so far as to send the completed script to a former Guantanamo Bay detainee for input, with the result being an absurd and hilarious movie from start to finish. As the group attempts to make their mark in the Mujahideen by planning a bombing in London, ranging from several options of bombing a Boots store - a popular health and beauty pharmacy chain in the United Kingdom - to a mosque - yes, a mosque -, the movie turns into a look at the possibility of what would happen if a bunch of utterly clueless individuals take a morbid interest in extremism. With a smile on their face, the entire group have delusions of grandeur stemming from their fanatic, fringe beliefs on how Islam is supposed to work, and how they go attempting to achieve the status they believe could be attained by proving themselves as devout Islam jihadists against the capitalistic Western world... and condoms. The jokes range from Barry's silly anti-surveillance tactics and to Waj training crows as suicide bombers. Quoting a particular scene would be me taking the fun out of those reading this from enjoying the movie. With a script as smooth as the feathers of a blown-up crow and despite how well Four Lions functions as a contemporary satirical movie, the jokes might be lost on those who don't understand the nuances of the subject matter that Chris Morris tackles or the idiosyncrasies of the characters in relation to religious extremism. It certainly helped that the cast were superb in their respective roles, with Riz Ahmed turning into an established actor in later films such as Nightcrawler (2014) and a charismatic performance in The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2011), which had also tackled terrorism and the Muslim identity in a post-9/11 world from a more serious perspective.
