The Iceman Cometh

The Iceman Cometh

During the Ming dynasty, Yuen Biao is a royal guard charged to capture a dangerous criminal. The battle which opposes them will make them fall into ice. Three centuries later, nowdays, the archaeologists give them again the life. Only a black jade Buddha and a temporal wheel would be able to make them return in their time. The battle would start again.

Thomas W (it) wrote: Christopher Menaul (Feast of July) directs this romantic drama based on Jonathan Smith's 1995 novel of the same name about a group of real-life Bohemian artists living in an ocean-side art colony known as the Newlyn School in Cornwall, England, in the early 1910's. Amongst the group of artists is the young Alfred Munnings (Dominic Cooper - The Devil's Double) who is later elected president of The Royal Academy of Arts (in 1944) and his best friend, the peered land agent/non-artist Gilbert Evans (Dan Stevens - 'Downton Abbey'). The arrival of the young aristocratic Florence Carter-Wood (Emily Browning - Pompeii) -- who likes to dabble in the arts -- excites Alfred and the two quickly become a romantic pair ... although things become terribly complicated when Gilbert decides he is in love with the girl as well. It is highly apparent to everyone in the community that the love triangle cannot end well. The film really wants to be something special but there is simply nothing compelling here and the characters as written are not ones anybody would really root for. The Cornish landscape is the lone wonderful take-away from this movie; but that is not reason enough to recommend this dismally depressing and dire waste of time.

Matt S (ag) wrote: Atrocious acting, terrible writing and a hokey story ultimately doom this movie that attempts to shed light on a very interesting subject--the Spanish Civil War. I feel angry with myself for sitting through the whole thing. Do not watch this film.

Sean D (ca) wrote: This film is nuts and twiztd and crazy and nonsensical. Unfortunately, it's extremely boring and has a fairly mundane pacing. But the climax and ending is pretty amazing, which makes for a pretty interesting story with a high level of crypticnesss. A very interesting and fairly original film by Dino de Laurentis, you often feel that this Stephen King film is some kind of horror version of his coming-of-age drama, Stand By Me. It might as well have been. The film could have been shorter. And probably very well, should have been.

But hair, hair they spent money on, so imagine a cheap Mad Max chased by 6 dune buggies driven by tough guys with great hairdos around and around in a circle and you got this picture.

Synopsis: A United Nations space mission bound for the planet Uranus blasts off in the year 2001, the crew reaches its goal but finds an exotic form of evil awaiting them. Made on a budget of merely $75,000 (by comparison, "The Magnificent Seven" made just two years earlier had a budget of 3 million), the onscreen images are often footage filmed in what looks like Wyoming or something, the dialogue is poorly written, the acting is sometimes laughable and theres little kinetic energy to speak of, most definitely a campy film. The scenarios are fittingly contrived of course which i suspect is a chief cause of this picture being almost maddeningly boring for most of it's runtime, besides maybe the cinematography. That being said the ending was quite a surprise, and made me think twice about what i just finished watching. The film was released during a time when drive-in theaters were extremely popular, many would not watch the film but make out, and there is allusions to romantic loss within the script, such themes are not emphasized, but some depth can be syphoned out of the experience. Though the film is the epitome of campy sci-fi, a script that shows slight signs of depth, ensure the time spent on Journey to the Seventh Planet isn't a total waste, though be prepared for a boring movie experience.
