Hatem A (au) wrote: 3.0/4.0"A Cat in Paris" a perfect demonstration that animation doesn't have to be too visually dazzling? for a cartoon feature to be intriguing. This French import is a unique piece animated noir that pays homage to the best in the genre without losing its appeal to kids. It centers on a little girl who lost her father and nearly doesn't talk since the event. She is unhappy with her police officer mom who is too focused on her career. She has a cat who at night partners up with a burglar. The events take place over the course of one night in which the girl follows the cat and gets entangled with the burglar and a ruthless crime lord responsible for her father's death. Brisk pacing and a 65-minute running time make this a one-of-a-kind animated experience that the whole family can enjoy. The characters are too cartoonish (especially the villains) for a piece of film noir but, hey, it is a cartoon after all. Saw the dubbed version and wasn't annoyed a bit. Nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar (2012).

Radha Mitchell gives a tour-de-france performance that should have been recognized by the Oscars but shamefully never did. She's just dynamite playing two characters with different plots: one tragic & one comic. The cast is full of great household names: Will Ferrell, Amanda Peet, Chloe Sevigny, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin, Steve Carell (who's convincing without being comic playing Ferrell's friend) & Wallace Shawn. The real standouts are aforementioned Mitchell, Ferrell who does steals every scene and channels Woody Allen very solid, Sevigny & Ejiofor.""It's classic decent Woody Allen movie: Shawn's character dines and tells a story with 3 other friends, different character storylines, classic music, cast channelling Allen & Allen casting Ferrell as a stand-in of his. Pretty good but not great Woody Allen movie."

Josh S (ag) wrote: Life is gorgeously major miniature. Who is Jean? We are always left wondering as does Laure. Her mind restlessly de- and reconstructs this man she has picked up. Is he by nature seducer or lonely? The prospect of merely either one is too much for her. This is a rapturously shot film, among the most gorgeous I've seen, and to date the only Claire Denis film I've seen. As Before Sunrise sadly yet admirably ages into an increasingly adolescent, androcentric fantasy (or gloriously into Before Sunset), my thirst for liberating cinematic rendez-vous remains unquelled. If Friday Night occasionally languishes, it does so fetishistically, playfully, and humanistically.

James P (jp) wrote: Kaurismaki defines modern Finnish cinema, and his films demonstrate a certain restraint in both direction and acting that can only be pulled off by Finns. Definitely worth a look.

Andrew D (jp) wrote: The movie does not have the charm as the television series, but it's still a decent attempt that captures the outlandishness of the cast. If you are a fan of the TV series, expect all the cliche lines from it all in under two hours.
