(gb) wrote: Modigliani was a mad man, (Andy Garcia is too fat for that bohemian role), in fact the core business of the movie is: showing how poor was the life of the Italian artist settled in an early 1900 Paris. Even the photography reflects Modigliani s works, all these lengthen figures. Anyway, the love for Jeanne makes Modi' a better man. The problem is that Jeanne goes crazy till the tragic epilogue. All the film is based on that artist contest in which all the artist in Paris compete to gain the prize for the best painting. Obviously the winner is Modi. But his most combative rival is no less then Pablo Picasso, the man who changes women into cubes. Madness and excessive drinking and smoking shit cause Modi a worsening of his pulmonary disease. Till he dies, after being hit by guys outside a pub, cause he did not pay the bill. A precursor of Pete Doherty. Modigliani Jews, Jeanne catholic. Picasso VS Modi. The wonderful/rich life of Auguste Renoir, one of the few men (with Picasso) who capitalized their art when they were alive. Jeanne is lovely, and I have found very difficult not to be fond of the art of my fellow countryman (from a very peculiar town: Livorno). Pity: There is no show for his sculptures, and the film seems more fit to be broadcasted on TV.

(ru) wrote: Dreadful. This was a really cool idea, but this film basically has ADHD. It cuts back and forth between characters like someone flipping channels. And after awhile, you just don't give a fuck about Leguizamo and Sorvino, and want to find out if the cops are closing in on the fucking serial killer that the characters are always talking about. The bad guy is an anecdote for people to talk about in the film, a sidenote until he's shown in like two scenes. And by far the worst part of this film is Spike Lee's indescribably bad acting...it might just be the worst acting I've ever seen in a film, which I don't get, because he's been in other films I believe, and he was okay there. But here, he's just so amazingly bad. Do not watch this movie. It sucks.
(us) wrote: I expected great things from this movie. After all, it has two of my favourite things in it: Jack the Ripper and Anthony Perkins. But no, this movie is utter nonsense. Alas.

(mx) wrote: This is such a British film, with a quintessentially British humour and British attitude towards the war. At times, the Britishness can becoe a bit overwhelming even for a native such as myself; that aside, the film boasts a stellar cast and once it gets going the community spirit becomes quite, quite infectious. An often overlooked slice of British (pork) pie.
(gb) wrote: Very depressing, realistic character study during a divorce. Not a fan of the ending, but I think that's the point here. Overall worth the watch- great performances by Gosling and Williams.
