(ru) wrote: Three good looking, deeply tanned teenagers (Barbara Hershey, Richard Thomas, Bruce Davison) form a special, profound bond while staying on an island for a summer. The three do everything together. They fish, they go see movies, they smoke pot, they wash each other's hair, and they explore each other through the lens of their budding sexuality. Next, enter Rhoda (Catherine Burns, who got a surprise Oscar nomination for her performance), another teenager who desperately wants friendship of some sort. Rhoda is the polar opposite of the other three--she is pale, wearing a frumpy old swimsuit, has braces, and a terrible haircut. The group of three initially reject her, but soon, under the command of Sandy (Hershey's character), they find cruel use for her. Frank Perry's Last Summer is a fascinating piece of filmmaking which explores how tantalizing sex is in the eyes of teenagers, and how two nice young men can be influenced to do anything at all, no matter how horrible, as long as a pretty girl asks nicely enough. The performances are fine overall--Thomas and Davison manage to appear innocent and corrupted at the same time, while Hershey's quiet malice shines through when appropriate. The real star here is Burns, however, who hasn't seemed to do much since this film was made, but her Rhoda is a stunning portrait of a depressed girl who wants nothing more than companionship. Last Summer is a very interesting film, well worth anybody's time.
