The Long Hope

St John’s head on the Island of Hoy is a wild and remote 1150 foot sea cliff. It was first climbed in 1970 by climber and poet Ed Drummond together with Oliver Hill. They took 7 days to climb the cliff, sleeping on ledges and in hammocks along the way. Now, 40 years later, one of the World’s top climbers, Dave MacLeod, sets out to climb the cliff in a single day, finishing with a new desperately hard final pitch up the headwall.Macleod’s historic new climb, The Longhope Route Direct (E11), is captured close-up with the latest HD cameras and contrasted with the challenges of Drummond’s first ascent through interviews and archive material. The film also follows Drummond, now in his late sixties and suffering from Parkinson’s disease, as he makes a pilgrimage back to St John’s Head to look upon the route one last time.

Kaiti T (nl) wrote: I love this movie, but the voices in the dubbed version are really annoying - stick with the subtitles instead.

Lucas M (fr) wrote: Taking Woodstock start interesting, but went the film begings to show the festival, Woodstock stay disagreeably sweet and presents a not so good screenplay, featuring some cliches. Don't focus really on the festival, showing just the making off. Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock is disappointing. Rotten.

Simon G (ag) wrote: I loved everything about this movie: The reflection on 1950s small town America, the mesmerising performance of Raymonde, the relationship changes between the young lads as they compete over her etc etc.

Kaya E (gb) wrote: Great Lovecraft adaptation. The only one who does satisfy the fans.

Andy F (de) wrote: Hugely annoying this horror / thriller / comedy didn't do it for me. When it plays it straight it has its moments but the film has the most annoying components of all the genres.

Sarah O (kr) wrote: This is one of those movies that is funnier when you look back & think about it than when you're actually watching it. The setting & characters are campy, but this is a John Waters film afterall. I think the locales are the best part of this movie, from the lesbian strip club for men to the sandwich stand on the side of the road. I love the religious Grandma & Pecker's thieving best friend. Little sugar-loving Chrissie is also hilarious. If I ever wondered why Edward Furlong never became a superstar, this movie will answer any questions surrounding his acting abilities. Good, campy fun.

Fong K (nl) wrote: viewed on 19/8/04 (Thurs)I really enjoy the parts when Godzilla goes on a rampage. It is pure entertainment and I want to see more of that, like a kid keep asking for more candies. The movie does not disappoint in this aspect. It is less talk and more SFX. Already I like this more than ID4 and The Day After Tomorrow. I don't really buy the idea of Godzilla trapped under the cables at the bridge. How will they know the cables will trap it? The bridge doesn't collapse given the sheer size of it? It even jumped. Nah, looking for loopholes in this kind of SFX blockbuster is really spoiling the fun of watching it. We should not take it so seriously so must the movie. I think that is why B-grade horror films always has a huge base of fans. A movie like this serve better with more visual thrills. Pump money in the SFX department and go all out to entertain. The only way to blow it is to insert some human drama. The actors and their stories are not at the centrestage. We pay money to see Godzilla only so omit the cheesy happy ending. I will cheer when Godzilla is dead but never for the characters' coming-of-age. I also don't like them making fun of my beloved Uncle Ebert too. It makes them look more like sore losers. The hint of a sequel is laughable, now that we know so many hated this movie so much that they scrapped the idea. I think I will like this movie more, and maybe many others, if the movie takes itself less seriously and just enthrall us with those awesome awesome visual effects. Rating: B-

Ken S (kr) wrote: The biggest flaw of this Ray Charles film, starting the musician as himself, is that there isn't enough Ray to sustain it. The main focus shifts from Ray to a blind boy and his mother, and then onto the mothers boyfriend who gets a job with Charles. The British family and the blind child aren't awful, but they aren't terribly interesting...and the real draw of the film is Ray Charles and his music, but they are practically background noise in the final picture...which is a shame.
