(gb) wrote: The opening scene is brilliant. The final scene is awesome. Unfortunately what happens in-between is nowhere near as good. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie and tapped away to the songs. As musicals go it is entertaining and well put together. It's just that it could have been so much more if the writers had added some genuine humour and a stronger story line. Its a bit like .The Commitments' without the laughs and a Bit like "Across The Universe" without the quality of the sings or the dramatic story line. If only the sheer quality of that first scene could have been maintained it may have gone down as a modern day classic!

(gb) wrote: Doc (Robert Duvall): [after hearing several of the townsfolk openly disparage George in the Bar] Why do ya have to tear him down? What are ya so afraid of? What have you got to lose? He wasn't selling anything! He didn't want anything from anybody! He wanted nothing from nobody! Nothing! And you people have to tear him down so you can sleep better tonight! So ya can prove that the world is flat and ya can sleep better tonite! Am I right? Am I right?... I'm right... The Hell with all of ya. The Hell with everyone of ya. [storms out of the Bar] Conceptually this was an interesting movie. I liked the idea of unlocking the human potential would lead to unexplainable "powers", I even don't mind the conclusion. Yes, it kind of feels a bit of a let down that they the powers that be chose the less controversial path instead of going the Sci-Fi route, but it's understandable. The cast was alright, Robert Duvall (who plays Doc) was the best and gave the most wonderful performance in the film followed closely by the talented Forest Whitaker, who was quite adorable in this movie. Watching Brent Spiner outside ST:TNG is always a treat. John Travolta was alright and Kyra Sedgwick was okay but their on-screen chemistry wasn't explosive-- maybe if someone else played opposite one or the other or if the two lead roles were cast different altogether this film could have been more dynamic; but as it stands, it was just alright, a little boring, a bit too cutesy. There was so much potential to this film but fell short of meeting it, this could have been so much more compelling.

(ag) wrote: Weird twist on a road movie. The tiny plot is more than made up for by the vivid cinematography, unique characters and situations our hapless protagonist stumbles across. Brilliant and yet sadly unknown.
