Tim S (es) wrote: The one thing that The Driller Killer has going for it is its reputation as a Video Nasty, which makes you want to see it even more. It can't be that bad can it? Well, yes and no. It's definitely not a gory bloodfest like the title implies it to be. It seems more like an arthouse sort of film, with some commercial potential. It's mostly slow and boring at times, but there are enough moments that kept my interest perked. The gore effects are pretty good, not great, and they're few and far between. I can understand people being disappointed by it. I certainly felt a little that way, but I don't think it's a total piece of garbage either. Abel Ferrara certainly knows how to mess with an audience, and this is certainly the case with this one. I recommend giving it a shot, even though you might not like it all that much. It's an interesting film despite itself.

Tim M (fr) wrote: Classic chanbara, would love a remake. The dated effects are part of the fun. "Achieves a few moments of transcendent beauty, and the quick, brutal swordfights ... are thrilling." "A rare film that succeeds as lowbrow visceral entertainment, or as high-concept art."
Will S (kr) wrote: The concept is sort of trite, but the script makes up for it completely. It's in a really glorious anamorphic widescreen, and the colors and production design are so intricate and so much fun to watch. Better than 98% of the comedies that will come out this year.
David D (gb) wrote: Those looking for something like Andromeda Strain will be sorely disappointed, but the film's loving view of humanity as a whole and the very flawed characters in the film is touching, sometimes funny, and very powerful emotionally. This film is poetry. Some have called it bleak - for me it was just the opposite. By the end I felt happy and grateful. Forget the scores above - just see it.
