(kr) wrote: Golden Door is a miniature epic, tracking a Sicilian's family emigration to the USA. It starts much too slowly, and although characters are established, it is ill thought out - particularly the dream sequences, which could have provided an added insight.Once the action moves onto the voyage, however, and Charlotte Gainsbourg's character is introduced, an interesting story emerges, and this, combined with humorous touches, are what make the film bearable. It is well directed and shot, with the other lead character, Vincenzo Amato, also impressing.. 2 1/2 Stars 3-19-14
(us) wrote: I feel a bit wrong in rating this because apparently I watched the crappy non-split-screen version that was made for TV, and which pretty much plays as an unimaginative TV movie with a decent script and likable acting that doesn't compare well to its obvious inspiration (though what movie does?) What I saw was pretty average, but my score will probably change when I eventually see it as it was originally edited.
(fr) wrote: this was actually better than I thought it would be. I thought it was going to the same story you usually see in lesbian movies. but it wasnt. there was rarely any lesbianism in at all, which ias what makes it good. The story lets the two women develop a relationship first before jumping each other's bones. :)

(au) wrote: Totally defanged as anything remotely resembling a thriller, horror or serious movie, but a relatively fun campy watch. I can't believe people never see the twist coming - I had it figured out within twenty minutes. Come on, have y'all never watched a movie before? Especially hilarious is William Castle coming to hold our hands in the last fifteen minutes of the movie, warning weaker members of the audience that what they're about to see is TRULY HORRIFIC and giving them a "fright break" to leave the theater if they are so inclined. Really, this is sort of an interesting look into a genesis of camp, where a genre piece has become so woefully dated (by means of technical composition and the changing of the form itself) that its worthlessness actually wraps back around to entertainment again. Fun, but too much of a Hitchcock ripoff to truly appreciate. Even in badness, originality is important.
(kr) wrote: Interesting, a bit dated now, but that is part of it's charm today. it's like a slice of life from the early television era. Ronald Coleman gives an admirable performance. The supporting cast is particularly good, especially Vincent price. Good natured fun.
(mx) wrote: Perfectly fine remake of the 1915 movie. Bankhead stars as the gambler who screws up even more and somehow has to come up with 10,000 dollars. A shady fellow though, will give her the money..but for a price! This was competently acted. No qualms.
