(fr) wrote: A Russian remake of "12 Angry Men," which is one of my all-time favorite films. There are some changes and localizations to the script which allow it to stand on its own (as well as the fact that some scenes take place OUT of the "jury room"), but it is the two different twists at the end which make this really shine. Highly recommended (which is something you do not often hear with remakes).

I just had the feeling that the character of Temple Grandin would be hard to pull off, and because of that would be more miss than hit. But then I just happened to look up the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and saw the 100% and 95%, so I settled in.The film was a great combination of acting, directing, and story telling. It didn't get into the overly maudlin nor the grandiose. It was a very down-to-earth portrayal of a very gifted women looking to move forward courageously in a very confusing world. I've seen Danes in a few movies, but never considered her a top notch actor. Well, I've found that, that's a very inaccurate appraisal. In this role she shined. She was Will Smith as Mohammed Ali. She was Jamie Fox as Ray. There WAS no Claire Danes only Temple Grandin. I loved the story, the struggle, the challenge, the courage, the love. A most satisfying film on all levels. Yes, near perfection indeed.

(gb) wrote: I actually disagree with many people who have seen this film and left it average reviews. Michelle Rodriguez is fantastic in this role and the whole film has a level of darkness and power while also being clear and enjoyable. Very good film.
(ca) wrote: It could have actually worked as a musical, Fred Astaire type musical. It was actually quite a cute idea. The writing wasn't that bad, but the editing was so awful, slow paced, and such bad music! Shame! Could have been good.

(kr) wrote: decent enough flick from john ford about british sailors during world war 2. nothing particularly memorable, though solid cast and interesting supporting role from john wayne...
(ru) wrote: Pretty dire action thriller, full of weird blurry camera effects, terrible dialogue, bad acting and a lame story line. The only slight saving grace is the odd half decent Snipes fight scene. Better than root canal surgery, but only just.
(jp) wrote: Dull and lifeless. The movie squanders the message it's trying to convey consistently. It treats depression as something it's not by showing two brats consistently acting out and hurting everyone around them. There is no redemption for the characters and they are awfully unlikable. The only saving grace is the decent performances by the leads. Luke Wilson is fun as Maggie's husband, but the movie treats him poorly and shows that the happy guy is out of place. There are many isolated plot points that just keep piling up for shock value and it's infuriating. Overall a very misguided and pretentious film that doesn't create engrossing characters and ruins any sort of message it's trying to convey.
