St. Vincent is above that fray, with a direction that is more interesting and a tone more believable than its kin. McCarthy is stellar, and Murray delivers one of my favorite performances from him in awhile. A lovely and lovable tearjerker that earns its tears by surrounding them with smiles.

The characters are all actors and terrible people and utterly lacking any compelling emotional quality. So when the heroin reaches out at the end in spite of herself, it gives us the most telling glance into her inner life. She is utterly desperate for something human, and is consequently punished for it. Anyone who sat through the two and a half hours was punished with her. But there is no decent way you could call this tragic. The movie was an exercise in the pathetic.

It?s the documentary about the Amish teens, and how when they become a certain age, they go off on their own partying and drinking and what not. Except they do a lot more than I ever thought they did. The tradition of what they do is pretty fascinating, but the documentary isn?t anything special. It?s not put together in any unique way, but it?s the content that makes it good. I Am Curious (Yellow)- A Swedish Pseudo-Documentary that?s pretty unique for it?s time, and for the current time. It?s deals with a girl fighting for non violence in the government, and they?re shooting a documentary about it. But we follow her inside the doc. And outside. But then they?re making a regular, fictional film, and I sort of forgot exactly why (it?s been nearly a month since I saw it) but it?s really great. And there?s a lot of nudity and sex for a film made in the 60s. Los Olvidados- My first film from legendary director Luis Bunuel, and it was pretty good. It was about a group of kids in a slum town, and some problems they go through. I?m going to be checking out some more films from the director, as this film was good enough to keep my interest in the other films of his I?ve wanted to see (Un Chien Andelou, Belle du Jour). Germany, Year Zero- Yet another film about a misguided youth, this time set during WWII. This film follows a kid as he tries to make money for himself, and his family, and the troubles he has with his family. It?s a heartbreaking film. The 400 Blows- Hey, guess what? Another film about boys in trouble. It?s a theme in my World Cinema class. I rented The 400 Blows a couple weeks ago, and watched half of it, and found out I?d be watching it my class so I sent it back and opted to just wait until class to see it. It?s a deserving classic by Truffaut about a kid having problems with school, and his parents.

Unlike many music artists, it seems he can act as he is believable on screen. He is supported by strong performances by Brittany Murphy, Mekhi Phifer, Kim Basinger and Michael Shannon.
