The Number 23

The Number 23

On his birthday, Walter Sparrow, an amiable dog-catcher, takes a call that leaves him dog bit and late to pick up his wife. She's browsed in a bookstore, finding a blood-red-covered novel, a murder mystery with numerology that loops constantly around the number 23. The story captivates Walter: he dreams it, he notices aspects of his life that can be rendered by "23," he searches for the author, he stays in the hotel (in room 23) where events in the novel took place, and he begins to believe it was no novel. His wife and son try to help him, sometimes in sympathy, sometimes to protect him. Slowly, with danger to himself and to his family, he closes in on the truth. . Krystal P (es) wrote: I dont think it is possible for a movie to be worse...you can't tell one actor from another, there is no mood, no character developement....there is nothing in this movie that could please a king kong or jurrasic park fan

Prach P (au) wrote: Here's another movie that focuses on style and is largely void of substance. It is more like a dance, a ballet - something you watch for its graceful movements, the lightness of the tiptoed steps and the firmness of the stomps. Thought of as a dance, this film is a light, whimsy and spontaneous kind. But normally we appreciate the grace of the movements in a dance in large part because we appreciate the ability of the performer to produce those movements in such a precise, delightful manner. In the case of this movie, however, it's not clear who the performer is supposed to be. Is it the main characters, or is it the film itself (i.e. the camera work)? (Perhaps both?) In any case, neither impresses me very much.In summary, if you want to see a film that is like a ballet, there's a chance you might like this film. But if you, like me, are more interested in the content, the story, the ideas, than the presentation, you won't like it.

Mau R (jp) wrote: Such as Amadeus is for music, this one is for chess: a great classic secular film about human genius. It actually inspired me to start playing chess, and I was good indeed!

James H (ag) wrote: Sylvester Stallone's success with Rocky the year before really went to his head on this clunker. He is such a megalomaniac, he had his hand in just about everything on this film, he even sings the opening credit's song! And badly at that! Well produced, money went into the film, but it is a poorly written story with a complete lack of period detail. Just Stallone making crap on a high from a previous success.

Allan C (au) wrote: I really wasn't familiar with Joe Orton, but regardless of that, I liked this film quite a lot. Great performances by Oldman and the underused Molina.

Paul A (ca) wrote: Not a bad movie but I thought The Perfect Storm was a better movie and this movie had a weak script in comparison. Worth watching if you like watching storms at sea, and it looked good visually but the weak script and storyline ruined it a little for me.
