Kenneth L (au) wrote: Hard-hitting and compelling documentary. A somewhat comprehensive introduction to the attrocities that are taking place in Darfur, its genesis and its unpredictable future all distilled into a very compact hour and a half. The most compelling moments in the documentary are when the images take over. In one riveting and horrifying sequence, the African Union Observers watch helplessly as Janjaweed ride in to the refugee camps and torch civilian huts in full-view, their hands tied because of a 'mandate' decreed by the impotent AU. In another, a montage of drawings by the children of Darfur reveal incomprehensible horrors witnessed by these young eyes. The film effectively conjures outrage and indignation that such horrors are allowed to exist today. The only people who come off less horribly than the politicians in charge are the Janjaweed and the Sudanese Liberation Army. The ultimate lingering question the film leaves us with is best articulated by humanitarian Elie Wiesel in its final postscript: How are they going to live now?

Joe W (jp) wrote: Eyes Wide Shut, sadly the only last touch of Stanley Kubrick before he passed away. A 1999 we witness the last Stanley Kubrick film of the 20th century. As I may be five years old when it was released, and witness it in my adult years. I find this film yet to be sad because he is one of the greatest and my favorite directors of all time. From a killer kiss to eyes wide shut. Once again by its rich cinematography that Stanley Kubrick always brings do all of his films which story telling rich screen writing. And possibly one of the best acting do woes I have ever seen. Nicole Kidman the leading actress plays a wife to her former husband in real life Tom Cruise. If you really want to see Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's best acting this film is it. This is my absolute favorite performance of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman really rich I have never ever seen a good movie that they ever done in their wives when I saw this the first time this is a truly and yet sexually active masterpiece I have ever seen in my life. People say this is just a porn film by Kubrick. As I really don't care about the sexual mine of this film. What really brings of this film is a father trying to abandon his wife that's how I see in this film and that's what really was the strong characteristic of this film. Like if you see in the shining you have a father that wants to kill his wife and son. As for eyes wide shut, we see a father wanting to do more than caring for his family, for abandoning a bad trace that will bring into his life. Is filmed that he was post to do after eyes wide shut was artificial intelligence. But then Steven Spielberg to go over the project to bring in a friends work of art. I believe the film was OK when I first saw artificial intelligence directed by Steven Spielberg, I believe it was OK but it didn't have that Kubrick touch. But then again Steven Spielberg is a good friend to Stanley Kubrick and mentor to cinema. I thought it was very sweet for Steven Spielberg making a film that he really didn't care to do but just for I departed friend. For eyes wide shut this is a unique way of storing telling about building a family. Stanley Kubrick had many steppingstones to Cinema, and hell I believe that they should have a statue in his honor. It is very sad that he had many projects after eyes wide shut but never got to do it. And as for Stanley Kubrick he is one the most interesting yet One of the most versatile unique directors or storytellers that I've ever witnessed by watching film. Stanley Kubrick is the best and I suggest that you should see all of his films because they are truly masterpieces. Same as eyes wide shut the last symphony that he ever played. Grade a perfect 10

Dave J (us) wrote: Monday, April 28, 2014 (1974) The Candy Snatchers SUSPENSE THRILLER Low budget exploitation flick which is the kind of movie that can possibly be championed by the Quentin Tarantino's movie vault, centering on 3 ambitious kidnappers kidnapping the daughter named Candy (hence the title) of the owner of a jewelry store. I have to say that the way Candy was kidnapped was so blatantly absurd, it's not even funny, for all she does is after coming out of school, she then tries to hitch rides with total strangers so that she can sneak to go to a friend's place. I mean, if she's supposed to be so rich why does she even have to resort into hitching rides with total strangers. Doesn't she have any friends or perhaps have enough money to pay for a taxi. After the kidnappers kidnapped her, they then stick her into this pre-dug hole shaped like a cemetery drop with a steel hollow pipe so that she can have some air while being tied and blindfolded. They then send a letter to the father informing him that if they want to see his daughter again, that he would have to take some of the store's jewels before dropping them into an unknown trunk of a car. This ransom plot sounds simple, right. Wrong. (Spoilers) As it turns out, while viewers are baffled about why the father insists on Candy being dead, we soon find out that the so-called father is not really her father after all, but really a step father. And that the father only married her mother so that he can be associated to the family fortune, with Candy's getting to inherit all of the jewels once turning the age of 21. What's absurd is that this environment the producers call a mansion is really a nice house with no maid or butlers, and that the husband provides all the needs to his wife, even though he often cheats on her. All that means, is that the entire environment has been compromised to adapt to this nonsensical level. In this movie, Candy has no friends, and that the mother only believes whatever her husband tells her. And although, she goes to school, the school or her school friends don't even try to contact them as well. It's like the father has everything conveniently happening well for him. I was cheering for the boy to be the hero, but the ending says otherwise, as he is as disturbed and troubled as his parents are. There would've been at least one character to root for, but the movie says no, for they prefer a cliffhanging ending to get people to think. And although they're correct on that spectrum, I'm still capable to argue why this movie is inconsistent and not worth watching at all. While there's plenty of suspense, there's not so much consistency in terms of plot. 2 out of 4 stars

Phil H (us) wrote: Right I'm gonna be honest here and admit I lost the plot with Resi Evil along time ago. I had the very first original game and followed the plot easily. Since then the story has spiralled off in various directions and has morphed into something quite different from the original simple idea.Thusly I am completely unable to determine if this new CGI animated sequel is accurate or follows on from any part of the numerous videogames. Of course the bottom line is if you wanna see a good proper Resi Evil flick then this is what you watch, unlike the comicbook style live action films.Yes this film is bloody and violent with no holds barred on what you expect from the Resi Evil franchise. I'm confident any fans will get a kick outta this new offering with some great creature action, zombie action and your obligatory slow motion action sequences which show off the crisp CGI to the smallest pixel. For me...I didn't really like it. Why? because the plot is sooooo so unexplained, do you have to be a Resi Evil fanboy to get this? No reason for anything that happens or why, characters are dull and stereotypical plus it just feels like a long videogame ingame sequence, but I guess that can't really be helped. I also found the CGI to be very very good on the human characters, especially facial close ups, but rather average on pretty much everything else! Lip syncing on speech is still somewhat lacking and looks a bit crappy. As for plot points, I didn't like the fact certain humans can now control the Bio-Organic Weapons through their mind via some kind of technological advancement. That advancement being an 'Alien 3' rip where by the Bio-Organic Weapon uses a human host to live in which creates a connection between the two, eh? I also didn't understand where all this BOW's came from either, this one guy controlled them and there seemed to be a never ending stream of the things...from nowhere.Other issues cropped up like the zombies going round stuffing these embryo type things down uninfected peoples throats. I guess they were the BOW embryo's that would enable humans to control them, but why would the zombies be doing that? who is controlling the zombies? oh my!Finally who or what on earth were these huge pale bald Mortal Kombat looking characters in the finale?? Just popped up from nowhere, virtually indestructible and looked like the alien space jockeys from 'Prometheus'. What really bugs me about Resi Evil now is the fact its become a kind of monster mash with no real suspense anymore. Its just a guns blazing, blood spilling, in your face monster brawl along the lines of Mortal Kombat, the original spooky horror element has faded away for pure adrenaline soaked action. I also feel the whole idea has been milked too much and the Umbrella company lost its mystery yonks ago. This is definitely the kind of Resi Evil film your looking for if your a fan but for uninitiated folk like myself it may seem a bit hectic and raise many questions. Questions like...what on Titan is going on here?!
