The Paranormal Diaries: Clophill

In March 1963, a black mass was held at a ruined church in Clophill, Bedfordshire by a coven of dark witches. Tombs were looted, animals sacrificed and human bones arranged during a macabre ceremony. Further defilements continued at Clophill in the following years, with cattle in nearby fields found mutilated, evidence of necromancy discovered and perpetual sightings of paranormal activity witnessed at the isolated ruin. 50 years on from the original incident, the Clophill legend remains etched on the psyches of the local populace. In 2010, a documentary team was assembled to investigate the legend of the Clophill witches and to try and uncover the truth behind the paranormal events. What followed during that long weekend at Clophill was a terrifying journey into the unknown.

Ed C (kr) wrote: One line summary: Well-directed political thriller concerning the turmoil in 1990s Sri Lanka.---------------------------------------------------- The setting is the turmoil of the 1990s in Sri Lanka. Vikram Singh is the point man for Army Intelligence (RAW, or Research and Analysis Wing) in the matter. He is drawn in when there are clear signs that an assassination attempt will be made on the former Indian PM, who seems likely to regain his seat of power. The enemy is faceless, well-organised, and quite good at segmenting what any individual or small group needs to know. Vikram and his entire organisation work very hard at this, and arrest several groups of perpetrators, only to find that there are many small, highly effective bands with the same goal. At one point, when Vikram gets close to a piece of the truth, he is kidnapped and tortured. He is rescued from this, and goes on the do more exceptional investigatory work. By the end of the story, though, Vikram has paid many high prices. Through the course of the investigations, Vikram interacts, guardedly, with war correspondent Jaya. Their careful sharing of information was a well-written part of the plot. Vikram's whole-hearted pursuit of the case had more than one bad effect on his relationship with his wife Ruby. The movie opens to Vikram in later life, alone, alcoholic, limping, and plagued with guilt over failures. Told in flashback style, the years spent pursuing the terrorists is gripping. The long effort at stopping the plot of Anna and the LFT was bulk of the film.-----Scores----- Cinematography: 8/10 Usually great, with a few moments of hand-held nonsense. Sound: 6/10 I liked the music over the closing credits. Sound was not done in the traditional Bollywood fashion, but then this is a more serious work than the more common musicals. Still, some instrumental music for accenting mood might have been nice. Acting: 8/10 The acting by the principals is outstanding. Screenplay: 10/10 The many threads are woven together rather well. The depiction of violence was difficult to watch at times, but trenchant and central to the overall story. Much more screen time goes to political intrigue and efforts at stopping a determined terrorist group from achieving its goals.

Micki B (gb) wrote: Very funny and it starred all my favorites. Total silliness but in a good way. The plot was full of holes but it was entertaining. I laughed all the way through.

Ashley T (gb) wrote: This was a decent movie, it probably never got good reviews or anything like that, but I was curious about it and am glad I watched it. Steven Strait is an amazing singer and he got to show off that talent in this movie. Ashlee Simpson kinda irked me but I was able to look past that.

Andrew H (gb) wrote: This is a Romero film that everyone can enjoy! It is very underrated and does not get all the attention it deserves. If you like Romero movies, motorcycles, or knights...this is a definite must watch!

Ian G (us) wrote: One of those films that must have been somewhat good on paper but unfortunately fell victim to studio interference, the director getting fired from the project which is starting to follow Paul Schrader since he has had a few of these now of late, and poor scripting decisions just to help complete the project just to see the light of day. You can see where Scrhader was interested at least at one point in this since it was based on his script and hit on a common theme, in this case PTSD with Cage's character after being tortured in captivity while overseas and him being captivated with seeking another encounter with his torturers to achieve some sort of closure 22 years later but having no idea as to to his location. Facing forced retirement, he goes rogue. Biggest fault is just a direction which tends to be the case with these films where the director is cut loose. it doesnt know whether it wants to be a respectable drama when it comes to this subject or a full on revenge piece which the tacked on ending eminently tries to call for. Also the laughable Romanian persona Cage tries to pull when facing his captors at the end of the film is a bit of a joke to put it midly. The decline of Cage continues and I hope that Schrader does get back on track with some more interesting work that doesnt get pulled from him.

Barry N (ag) wrote: You can only do so many jokes about cars before the whole thing becomes tired and familiar. This movie used the same worn out tired formula out the first 3 movies that becomes really old, very fast. I laughed maybe twice, throughout the entire film. The title doesn't make sense at first, until the very end which was a lame attempt at a joke. The lamest and weakest of the Herbie francise.
