The Phantom of the Opera
Count de Chagnie has discovered Christine's singing talent on a market place and sent her to his friend Carriere, the director of the Parisian opera. However just when she arrives Carriere's dismissed. His arrogant successor refuses to let a woman of low birth sing in his opera, but graciously employs Christine as gadrobiere for his wife Charlotta, who's installed as first singer. He also fights the phantom, an unknown guy who lives since many years in the catacombs below the opera and was granted privileges by Carriere. However the phantom knows how to defend himself and at the same time helps Christine to her career.

(jp) wrote: A moving, somewhat uneven, meeting-of-lost-souls movie. Elvis is an emo mortician, and Anabelle is the breath-of-life who turns his world upside-down! His stubborn...emo-ness and her bossy optimism kinda wore on me a bit, but Minghella and Lively are both invested in their roles. But of course, there's the obligatory "let me explain" scene in the pouring rain, in which Elvis doesn't really explain, and Anabelle is forced to think the worst of him and the *spoiler alert* seemingly necrophiliac pictures.Overall, a nice little story about miracles and redemption.

(mx) wrote: Surprisingly, this is actually better than all the other Karate Kid movies, mainly due to its improved plot, and the vicious fight scenes. The acting is pretty good, even though the characters still follow roughly the same formula as usual. The overall message is the same, but with a few good lines. The presentation is pretty standard fare for an 80's movie, but it isn't too bad. The fighting can be pretty brutal, but that's what I should be seeing in a karate movie. Overall, it's the best movie in a mediocre trilogy, but it still carries the same "McDojo" philosophy of the first film.

(kr) wrote: Corman and Price team up for the final time for a Poe adaptation, and it is another stylish and well made horror picture. Price is a little old for the role he is playing, but that is a minor problem here. Corman shot the film in Britain with real locations, and that gives this film it's own style apart from the other adaptations, which were mostly studio bound. It isn't my favorite Corman/Poe film, but it is quite good in itself.
