JJ W (fr) wrote: There's a part of me that really wants to give this film a break and praise it. Because, honestly, as a first effort by Djo Munga with little support from his home country, this really is an admirable effort. Yet, I have to be honest, Viva Riva! is weirdly derivative. Incorporating all the elements of the typical gangster and noir in it's script, the story just seems rather uninteresting by the end of the movie. I have to admit, there might be a political message that I might be missing but after 3 different viewings I just could not get any more from the experience than my first time viewing it. If writer and director Munga wanted to do more than re-tread the gangster genre then he didn't executed it very well. Another interesting paradox Viva Riva! has is that it's shot and written in a very mundane and down-to-earth fashion. Yet, it occasionally deviates from that and incorporates some very romanticized and stylized plot devices. There is nothing wrong with a stylized representation of the gangster world that is meant to be more operatic than a realistic portrayal. But Munga seems to try to do both and the film just ends up feeling contrived. Essentially Viva Riva! is a more watered down and African version of Gomorrah but ends up saying much less than the Italian gangster film. Again, commendable effort but a derivative experience nonetheless.

Corey P (gb) wrote: This movie could have been better if worked on more. It could have been one of my favorites. The story is weak and you don't really get connected to any of the main characters. The plot is thin and feels as if the writers only cared about the action sequences towards the second half of the movie. Don't get me wrong if the movie had invested better drama into it and made us feel more connected to each character then hands down this movie would have been way better. This movie is only saved by it's cast and it's action sequences.

Robert D (us) wrote: A brilliant retelling of Mozart's life and misadventures through the eyes of Antonio Saltier, recounting to his confessor why he was driven by jealousy to murder the great man. Historians reject this version -- the two men co-authored a cantata, for instances -- but it's a good story. One unintended consequence of the movie was a modern surge in popularity of Saltieri's work, largely forgotten for two centuries.

Keenan S (us) wrote: Silent Running is a superb sci-fi film about all sorts of things, ranging from the environment, messages about changing times, loneliness, and much more. I found myself engaged from start to finish as the story followed the character Lowell and how his sudden breakdown from realizing he's about to lose his dream costs him everything and how he is forced to fight his inner turmoil (After killing his fellow crew members during his breakdown and hijacking the ship) in the never-ending abyss of space, with only the company of machines to keep him sane. While most viewers these days will bash this film for being dated, I absolutely loved this film and I feel it hasn't aged a day because it still has a lot to say about the world, human nature, and technology. If you enjoy the darker 70's sci-fi films, this is one to check out.
