(fr) wrote: The Norwegian Wood film adaptation didn't capture the essence of the book enough to be even be close to okay. It was terrible. I think they did a good job in putting names with faces but everything else was horrible. Lots of the things in the book that put the experiences of characters set in stone was butchered and not cleanly either. I understand it is diffcult to put such a great literary work into a movie but I wish that they put a lot more effort into it. I do also understand that in movies, a lot of things has to be rewritten but I wish they did it in a manner that they changed small details, nothing that takes away from the important scenes in the book because I find that not enough of the important scenes were used and the unimportant scenes were. A lot of the important conversations didn't happen and a lot of the scenes were wrong; completely and utterly wrong. Like Naoko and Watanabe's sexual encounters, the complete obliteration of the scene where Reiko and Watanabe give Naoko their own version of her funeral, and the other experiences that Watanabe had to go through to get where he got to in the end. I became attached to Reiko while reading the book and I was really disappointed of her character being completely cast aside. She was really important in character development in the book and something the directors, or who ever was in charged, could have used to their advantage. It was a missed opportunity in not using her. I hope that there's a complete redo of this movie in the future because it gives the book no justification whatsoever and I also hope that the redo of this movie gives absolutely no fucks in its time length because that's what this book demands. For such a book to be dubbed as a book "everyone's read" in Japan, you would think that they would have tried a little harder. So if this movie is in your watch list, cross it off, especially if your are an individual who read and fell in love with the book, I give it -10/5. It's really that bad. Don't waste your time.

I do not see how a ship cut in half would stay up that long, I just don't. Secondly, most of the cast deliver underwhelming performances throughout. The one standout for me being Casey Affleck. He really took the film over for me. Chris Pine was fine, Ben Foster was fine, the rest just fine. I'll give this film kudos on pacing. It doesn't really waste time and it knew when to end itself. In the end, The Finest Hours was just alright, nothing special.
