a fun film to watch - funny imaginative postmodernist twist to the trad fairy tale. A great relief after the miseries so far that is the LFF.

A good noir with some really good scenes but overall it does not quite deserves its reputation as on of the genre's best. True enough, Mitchum is great in it and his character has the nice habit to destroy any kind of romanticism as soon as it appears. Other than that I am sure cinema historians will remark the rather dark side of society portrayed here (economic success just brings boredom, the judicial system is idiotic, relatives deserve to be killed, love is not of any importance). I know it is quite daring for 1952, but nowadays it looks middle and somewhat out of fashion. Some scenes deserves to be remembered though, specially the trial and the ber-strange wedding.

Although now dated this film was groundbreaking in it's day. Loved Simone Signoret as the older other woman...very Oscar worthy. Very enjoyable, and a good performance by Laurence Harvey. Be careful what you wish for...you may get it at any cost...
