The Resistance

In 1937, Japan began their invasion of China by murdering over 300,000 people in the capital of Nanjing. The atrocities committed against women and their daughters are especially barbaric. One of them is Xiaoyun, a peasant girl who fights with the Chinese resistance group. On her way to freedom she must fight against Japanese soldiers, ninjas, a killer geisha, Nazis, and the evil General of the Japanese imperial army.

Simon G (kr) wrote: Not quite what I was hoping for from one of my all time favourite video game franchises but the action is mind blowing in places - a second act roof-top chase sequence with the best use of a bow and arrow ever committed to celluloid springs to mind - and overall an enjoyable experience if you just go with it.

Gavin P (nl) wrote: A fun ride! Not really horror or scary, but definitely some tense moments. Quid (Keach) & his dingo, Boswell are the main stars, with Hitch (Lee Curtis) providing able back-up. The Nullabor is an excellent setting and even though it's mostly a truck playing cat & mouse with a van, it moves at a decent pace. Nice ending.

Kevin N (jp) wrote: Robert Bresson made a handful of great films, but few of them are as mesmerizing as this, his take on King Arthur and his Round Table. As Kubrick would do one year later with 'Barry Lyndon', Bresson here strips this story down to its bare reality and captures several so-called legends at their most vulnerable. What's so remarkable about the film is how much of a mess the narrative is. Everyone walks around without a clue about what comes next; people make decisions, change their minds, change their minds again; mistakes are made, backs are stabbed, regrets are had. As he always did so well, Bresson captures the most seemingly insignificant moments and brings them to our attention. While knights lance in a tournament, we are permitted only to watch their horses' feet. We rarely see the front of Lancelot's face (played with admirable nothingness by Luc Simon), so that when we are allowed a glance it is foreign and intriguing to us. In fact, while cinema in general has desensitized us to the power a face can have, Bresson reintroduces it in all of his films as something much more expressionistic than any man-made art form. In this way the film is indescribably exciting. To watch it is to rediscover a familiar story in a much more organically accessible and interesting way.

Grant S (gb) wrote: Well-intentioned but clumsy.Hair Spray has some great ideals and intentions. Set in the 1950s it deals with racism and intolerance. Surely this is a basis for something profound.Unfortunately, no, not really. What follows is fairly predictable and unoriginal. if it was made in he 1950s it would have been quite revolutionary, but by now the topic has been explored a lot, and in much better detail. The fact that it is a musical detracts from the topic, making it feel light, rather than serious and gritty. The music itself is mostly quite dull, and seems to rely largely on existing 50s music with new lyrics (and the new lyrics don't do the old songs much justice). The main novelty of the movie is John Travolta acting as a woman. Unfortunately, ultimately that's all it is - a novelty. His performance feels clumsy and forced. A decent female actress would have done a better job.Remaining performances, from an all-star cast - Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Queen Latifah, Zac Efron, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Jerry Stiller, are good though.
