Thomas W (kr) wrote: A romance for the underserved "over 40" crowd at the multiplexes, Face of Love stars Annette Bening (Being Julia, Bugsy) as widow Nikki who casually meets a man named Tom (Ed Harris - The Rock, The Hours) whom she becomes infatuated with because of his eerie resemblance to her departed husband. Tom, an artist, understands the attraction and flirts back with the intelligent Nikki although he is never told what the basis of the attraction is. Nikki becomes somewhat possessive of her new relationship and fears those from her past -- her children, neighbors etc. -- seeing Tom and ruining this new experience for her. Nikki is a difficult nut to crack open and I don't think the film succeeds in doing it completely ... even though Bening and Harris do fine in their respective roles. By film's end, I am just as baffled by Nikki as I was at the beginning of the movie. Robin Williams (Good Will Hunting, Insomnia) co-stars as a nosey neighbor harboring feelings for Nikki and Amy Brenneman (Heat, 88 Minutes) plays a still-friendly ex of Harris' who alone seems to question what Nikki is up to.

Amy M (us) wrote: I love this movie and I dust it off every few years so I can just kick back and laugh. It garners an amazing cast and some great lines/scenes. I think the humor of this film was largely lost on people who did not get it's sarcasm and dry humor. It gets better every time I see it and I'm sorry it's not rated higher. Is it the best period piece ever made? Not even close. You have to understand who Pryor and Murphy were at the time it came out and their brands of comedy. It's basically them being themselves in a 1930s flick. I wish people would stop analyzing it so hard--jeez, take some time off from being right knowing everything and just let yourself have a good laugh. The movie isn't trying to be serious, so calm it down and go back to your lives citizens. Then dust it off in a few years and enjoy again. One of my favorite comedies overall and a movie where I catch new stuff every time I see it.

Lewis E (fr) wrote: Not particularly a hilarious duo but Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear acting as conjoined twins helps sets it apart from other comedies that are also average in humour quality but lack a charming story to fall back on. They generate enough chemistry with each other to make audiences care for them as they measure the value of their brotherly and physical connection against their individual goals. The premise had potential in allowing the writers more ammo to incorporate puns and humorous situations related to their condition, which they constantly tried to make use out of. It's just a shame that the jokes don't hit the target often enough. Don't go out of your way to watch but it might be a decent shout if ITV2 or E4 happen have it on.
