The Shanghai Spell
A fourteen year old lad discovers his first love at the point of his pencil whilst drawing the portrait of a sickly but coquettish fifteen year old girl. In the neighbourhood an old freedom-fighter pits himself against bad types, a pretty cinema-ticket girl takes to the streets at night and a young anarchist dedicates himself to telling tall stories. Far away, in Shanghai, a hero of the Republic meets a beautiful femme fatal with oriental eyes. Reality and fiction become fused in an embrace.

(ru) wrote: Set on the Wirral a young man wants to 'get in' with the pack finding his way through one of them. They are football hooligans & he wants to be part of it breaking free from every day Thatcherist life. The films big problem is that they just aren't convincing as hooligans more like new romantics. This ruins it from the start as its not believable. Its saving grace is the soundtrack. There are plenty of other films on this subject to see before this one.
(fr) wrote: Utterly despicable trash. Terribly acted and devoid of originality. Just moderately decent gore. There are many way better gore flicks.Zero Stars

(ag) wrote: Estes's debut feature is a chilling thriller, that questions morals and coming of age. The film features a brilliant ensemble cast, who all give equally brilliant performances. Josh Peck, who's famous for his comedic roles, is one of the stand-out of the group. At times, the film is uneasy to watch, but ultimately Estes gets his message across with a punch.
(gb) wrote: Unbreakable is a slowburn story that focuses on characters finding out there's more to them than meets the eye. It's fun to watch unfold, but lacks any moments that truly feel excellent.

(es) wrote: This film - reportedly Jane Powell's favorite of all her movies - is hard to find but oh, so worth it. When a quaint Victorian family takes a vacation in turn-of-the-century Catskills, their teenage daughters are all too eager to grow up and find some beaux. Powell and a sparkly young Debbie Reynolds are hilarious in this charming period romantic comedy (and Ricardo Montalban ain't bad, either)!
(jp) wrote: While not a 5-Star masterpiece, the film is a fun, thought provoking and action filled adventure with great performances by Nigel Hawthorne, Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock. The film is somewhat flawed, but has no major flaws that jump to mind, the message is put forward in a not too subtle or heavy handed way. In the end demolition man is a good fun film with a plot that aged better than any other.
